Moon Duo Live in Philadelphia (03/25/11)

Who?: Moon Duo
Where?: Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia, PA
When?: March 25th, 2011

Yesterday was kind of a boring day until I found out at the last minute that MOON DUO were playing last night at Kung Fu Necktie. Despite feeling completely sick, I decided not to waste the opportunity to catch the propulsive psyched-out duo surpass everyone’s expectations. These guys just dropped their brand new album “Mazes” on Sacred Bones, and last night they dropped plenty of jaws at KFN. Below is a solid batch of videos from the show, spanning over just about twenty minutes in length, so don’t miss out! Also included is the self-titled brand new track “Mazes”, along with “Dead West” from their “Killing Time” EP. Continue reading “Moon Duo Live in Philadelphia (03/25/11)”

Creepoid Live in Philadelphia (03/11/11)

Who?: Creepoid
Where?: Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia, PA
When?: March 11th, 2011

As some of you should already be aware, there’s this band from Philadelphia known as CREEPOID. They took over the stage last night at Johnny Brenda’s with their heavy grunge rock, which just so happens to be their last show before they head out on their journey to SXSW in Austin at the beginning of next week. Last time we caught Creepoid was at their record release show back in January, and since then it appears they’ve been hard at work, because they shared a brand new song with us last night that I so excitedly caught on camera. Aside from that, they played a handful of songs from their latest album “Horse Heaven”, as well as a track from their debut 7″. So without further to say, how about we check those out? Lower Dens Live in Philadelphia (02/24/11)

Who?: Lower Dens
Where?: The Ox in Philadelphia, PA
When?: February 24th, 2011

Lower Dens were in town last night and we were there to capture some of the action live on camera. At first I was a little upset because the footage appeared to be ruined after the import process, but all is well now. (Note to self: turn OFF the video preview while importing). So after a second and much more careful video import, I now have these videos to share with you folks. Lower Dens put on a grand display of their unique “haze” rock, with all of it’s swirling guitars and crushing rhythms. They played songs from their 2010 album “Twin-Hand Movement”, as well as their brand new single, along with the B-side “Dear Betty Baby” which I regretfully did not catch on video. Creepoid w/ Nothing, Party Photographers & Pet Milk Live in Philadelphia (1/13/11)

Who?: Creepoid w/ Nothing, Party Photographers, Pet Milk
Where?: Kung Fu Necktie, Philadelphia, PA
When?: Thursday, January 14th, 2011

Last night was quite the night for the Philadelphia music scene. CREEPOID headlined a show at Kung Fu Necktie, which just so happened to be the record release show for their debut album “Horse Heaven”. Also in attendance were Philly locals Nothing, Party Photographers, and Pet Milk. All in all it was a great night, although some bands noticeably played a bit more sloppy than the other. Pet Milk took the stage first, followed by Party Photographers, then Nothing, and finally Creepoid. Check out at least one song from each band below, ranging from the drunken, reverberated pop of Party Photographers to the evil and demonic guitars of Creepoid. Don’t sleep on these videos folks, we think yr gonna like what you see (and hear!). Continue reading “Creepoid w/ Nothing, Party Photographers & Pet Milk Live in Philadelphia (1/13/11)”

Interview and performance with CREEPOID

As some of you may already know, the record release show for the brand new CREEPOID album “Horse Heaven” is tomorrow night. The show takes place at Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia, starting promptly at 8pm.

Creepoid will be joined on stage by some of the most prominent Philadelphia bands storming the scene, including Party Photographers, Pet Milk, and Nothing. If you couldn’t already tell, it’s going to be a hell of a night for the Philadelphia music scene. Not only are all those bands from the city, but even the record label releasing the Creepoid album is Philadelphia based – the one and only Ian Records – who (to sweeten the deal even further) exclusively releases music from Philadelphia bands. So yes – all things Philadelphia at the show on Thursday. We at the Styrofoam Drone will be very upset if we don’t see you. Look for the dude up front with the annoying camcorder and come say hi – but that’s not all we have for you today…

Before their album was officially released, the good people of Creepoid were nice enough to sit down and have an enlightening chat about their brand new album with the Styrofoam Drone. We were lucky enough to catch most of the interview right on video. They graciously invited me into their cozy home in Philadelphia, offered far-from cheap beer (the best some might say), watched some hockey, and even set their equipment up to perform a song from the new album exclusively for the blog. Can you say awesome? I hope so. If not, just watch below and see for yourself.

And then the interview.

Cozy home? Check. Awesomely loud snoring dog? Check. Good beer? Check. The four band members Pete, Sean, Anna and Pat talk about various things ranging from the origins of Creepoid to their first 7″, and then a ton of stuff that encapsulates their process of the new album, including artwork, working with others, record labels, and the like. Hopefully you’ll learn something new from watching these videos, and we only hope that we’ll see you at the show tomorrow night – Philadelphia, PA @ Kung Fu Necktie, 8pm. See you there.

And don’t forget to check out the review of their new album “Horse Heaven”, which was the latest edition to our “Still Spinnin'” feature. Thank you and enjoy…see ya tomorrow πŸ˜‰

PS – Another good show happening this week, featuring another one of our favorite Philly bands MOON WOMEN. If you’ve got nothing better to do the next two days and yr from Philly, well now yr in luck. Enjoy.

Warpaint Live in Philadelphia (12/3/10)

Who?: Warpaint
Where?: Making Time @ Club Voyeur
When?: Friday, December 3rd, 2010

Being 21 means you can legally drink alcohol – being 21 and going to a show at a club means you’re going to be surrounded by drunk people who can no longer grasp the idea of a general admission show. No, you don’t have divine rights to the spot you’re standing in, and as soon as I get a chance to kick your ass out, you better say goodbye to your precious spot.

WARPAINT played in Philadelphia this past Friday night for Making Time at Club Voyeur, and it was absolutely packed. The all girl band released their first official full length back in October, entitled “The Fool”, and now they’re out on the road to support it. They played a handful of some of the best songs from “The Fool”, and they even covered a few songs from their “Exquisite Corpse” EP that originally came out on Manimal Vinyl last year.

When these girls play live, they all enter their own zone, and there isn’t much that can throw them off their game once they’ve gotten started. So all you need to do is watch and let these lovely ladies take you to another world as they play their own unique blend of slithery psych-rock and show off just how well they can perform in a live setting. Check out these five videos below and see for yourself. Continue reading “Warpaint Live in Philadelphia (12/3/10)”

Women w/ dd/mm/yyyy Live in Philadelphia (10/10/10)

Who?: Women with dd/mm/yyyy
Where?: Johnny Brenda’s, Philadelphia, PA
When?: October 10th, 2010

Hey there – sorry for the post delay today. Tons of things needed to be done before this was made up. So as you might already know, last night two equally awesome Canadian bands were in Philly. Those bands were WOMEN, who hail from Calgary, and then DD/MM/YYYY, who hail from Toronto. At first glance, these two bands might not seem like they go together too well, but think about it a little more and you might change your mind. They both like to play as loud as possible, and they both tend to have noisy and rackety qualities. Lots of little intricacies (that aren’t always subtle) make up the bigger picture for both of these bands while they’re performing on stage. Whether it’s the unique, jaw-dropping guitar playing style found in Women, or the relentless full-on musical assault from dd/mm/yyyy, either of these bands are bound to entertain. Now see for yourself after the jump: Continue reading “Women w/ dd/mm/yyyy Live in Philadelphia (10/10/10)”

Vermillion Sands – Live in Philadelphia (10/2/10)

Who?: Vermillion Sands w/ Omar, Factors of Four and Slutever
Where?: The Drone Duplex in Philadelphia, PA
When?: October 2nd, 2010

This past Saturday night was quite a good time. Before I go any further, I want to thank everybody that came out to party and enjoy the show, because it turned out to be a memorable night. Since it all went over without any issues, we can only hope that there will be another show in the very near future!! The Vermillion Sands enjoyed their stay in Philly, and we’re glad they came out to play their bandit style garage rock for us. They were super psyched to be playing at a house party, too, because I think they were ready for some fun. Last night was the last night of their tour, and it ended in Baltimore. Now I think the band is hanging out in the US for a little bit before heading back to Italy. Here’s how Saturday night went down, after the jump: Continue reading “Vermillion Sands – Live in Philadelphia (10/2/10)”

VERMILLION SANDS! TONIGHT IN PHILLY (10/2)!!!

I hope you all didn’t forget about today! I can’t believe how quickly it crept up on us either! Italy’s own VERMILLION SANDS are probably on their way to Philadelphia as you read this, and they’re coming to play tonight with local Philly bands Omar, Factors of Four, and recently added guests Slutever! (If you haven’t guessed it yourself, the theme/trend for the bands tonight is definitely female singers.)

The show is taking place tonight (Oct. 2nd) in North Philadelphia, around 8-8:30 pm in the Temple U. area, at Park Ave. and Dauphin Streets. The show costs $5, and there are arrangements for people who would like to drink beer! If you’re from the Temple area, just follow Liacouras Walk up the street (to Park Ave.) that leads you behind the McDonalds across from White Hall. Continue walking down Park Ave. until you cross over Dauphin St., and then look for the house with the loud shit going on on your left hand side. If you’re coming from a bit further away in the city, take the Broad Street subway line up the North Philly direction until you reach the Susquehanna/ Dauphin station. Follow the street behind the Rite Aid (which is Park Ave.) until you cross over Dauphin. Then “look for the house with the loud shit going on on your left hand side.” Hopefully nobody has any trouble, but you can get more details right here on the Facebook event page. Hopefully you’ll all come out tonight and witness the madness that will be taking place in my very basement. But just in case you can’t, I’m going to capture a good amount of the show on video for y’all to see sometime next week. So come on out, don’t forget yr $5, drink some beer, and have a great night. See you then.

PS – If you think yr coming, please RSVP on the Facebook event page!

PAVEMENT Live in Philadelphia (9/17/10)

Well, first off, I’d like to say one thing – I was TOTALLY wrong about the Mann Center allowing cameras at the show. People were snapping pictures and filming videos left and right like it was their jobs. This made me VERY upset, because I didn’t bring along ANY of my cameras or camcorders, and for this I apologize. I would’ve been able to film vids and snap pics with no sweat whatsoever. Maybe we’d be watching a live video of the song “Grounded” (because it was fucking awesome) right now if I had brought my camera. Seriously, I could have had front row, ‘Class A’ videos to share with you guys today. Instead I have a couple of mediocre (but right up to the stage) pictures I snapped with my cell phone. And quite frankly, the fact that I didn’t get any videos totally urks me. Basically I feel like I let ya’ll down. I didn’t lose any sleep over the matter, but still – I didn’t get any videos when I could have. A once in a lifetime happening – seeing fucking Pavement with a fourth row, pit seat. Huge-ultra-mega-bummer. Oh well, I’ll make double the effort for footage when I see them again next weekend at the Central Park Summerstage in New York Cityyyy. It won’t be nearly as easy to get as close as I was last night, but I’ll do what I can.

They definitely didn’t disappoint when it came to the music though. They played for nearly two hours, and they came back for two different encores. They covered a ton of different songs ranging from all of their five studio albums, but they definitely ignored “Terror Twilight” the most. Some songs that I can remember them playing were Silence Kit, Stop Breathin’, Cut Your Hair, Gold Soundz, Range Life, Stereo, Shady Lane, Date w/ IKEA, Starlings of the Slipstream, Trigger Cut, Conduit for Sale!, Two States, Here, Box Elder, Spit on a Stranger, We Dance, Rattled by the Rush, Grounded, Grave Architecture, and Fight This Generation.

I know there’s a few more mixed in there that I missed, so if you were at the show and remember some others, leave a comment and share your experience! And I’ve got a couple more pictures for you guys below that I took with my camera. Mind you, they’re not the greatest quality, but they’ll suffice. Cell phone cameras can only do so much. Also uploaded some Pavement songs at the last minute, so check those out. All in all it was a great show, and probably the most awesome way I can think to spend my 21st birthday. Fucking Pavement.

PS – I still have more record downloads for everybody. Keep checking back here and on my Tumblr for that.
