George Szegedy was the man behind the drum set in the People’s Temple. Now a defunct band, he has his own solo project under the name CRYSTAL DRIVE out of Lansing, Michigan. This self-titled LP is his first release of any sort (and a first from any member of his previous band), coming pressed in an edition of 300 pieces from Jett Plastic Recordings based in Detroit.

Basically these are our favorite records/ singles, whether they’re 30 years old or just came out yesterday. You should listen to them.
Omni – Sunset Preacher 7″
Chunklet Industries is not paying us to cover their records. They’re just on fire, as we’ve covered 2 of their 3 latest singles from April 2018 alone. The latest is from Atlanta garage-pop knee jerkers OMNI and it’s their second single for the label since 2017. It’s a fantastic snapshot of their body of work until now, which also includes two excellent albums on Trouble In Mind Records.
In Retrospect: The Airing of Grievances, 10 Years Later
Ten years ago tomorrow, a band from Glen Rock, NJ dropped their debut album, The Airing of Grievances. It was initially released by Troubleman Unlimited in New Jersey, and then brought to Europe by Merok Records (and later reissued by XL Recordings in 2009). Before this, the band had little to their name aside from a couple of 7″ records and a handful of often inaudible live videos on YouTube.

Bonny Doon – Longwave
Longwave is the sophomore album from the Detroit, MI quartet BONNY DOON. Woodsist Records in New York is a fitting home for the record, which comes hot off the heels of their eponymous debut from 2017 on Salinas Records. It’s an impressive collection of material, leaving us just over 40 minutes of summertime-ready tunes, perfect for your next (psychedelic) road trip. Continue reading “Bonny Doon – Longwave”
Navy Gangs – s/t 7″ EP
NAVY GANGS is a four (maybe three?) piece garage band based somewhere in Brooklyn, NY. Modern Sky Entertainment dropped their debut 7″ EP late in 2016. It’s chock full of invigorating guitar licks, slathered carefully over a generally greasy complexion that will quickly burn out the motor on your turntable from repeated record flipping.
White Boy & the Average Rat Band – s/t LP
I can’t think of a better way to get things rolling here again. Heaven & Hell Records in North Carolina just unleashed the first true reissue of WHITE BOY & THE AVERAGE RAT BAND since 1980. This self-titled sludge bomb has likely become the holy grail of titles for many record collectors, but this new pressing makes it accessible to a whole new generation who loves blowing their eardrums out in the name of ripping, metal-influenced guitar hookage. Continue reading “White Boy & the Average Rat Band – s/t LP”
Male Gaze – Gale Maze
Castle Face Records just proudly dropped the debut LP from MALE GAZE, Gale Maze. The San Francisco-based trio features Castle Face co-runner Matt Jones who is an ex-member of now-defunct bands Blasted Canyons, Mayyors and The Mall. Continue reading “Male Gaze – Gale Maze”
Wet Blankets – Rise of… 12″
Agitated and Anti Fade Records joined forces to bring us the first proper release from WET BLANKETS. Rise of Wet Blankets comes released on 12″ vinyl containing 11 throbbing cuts of straightforward punk rock. Continue reading “Wet Blankets – Rise of… 12″”
Frankie and the Witch Fingers – s/t LP
Based in Bloomington, Indiana, FRANKIE & THE WITCH FINGERS drop their cataclysmic 12″ debut tomorrow on Permanent Records. The album is home to a scathing new set of LSD-cured garage rock. Continue reading “Frankie and the Witch Fingers – s/t LP”
Straight Arrows – B-sides of 2014
Prior to dropping 2014’s Rising, the STRAIGHT ARROWS released a 7″ with the album’s lead single. After the LP dropped they released a 7″ specifically for their ensuing European tour, and both included a previously unreleased B-side track. Continue reading “Straight Arrows – B-sides of 2014”
