Styrofoam Drone Presents: Burnt Ones, Raw McCartney, Jackie Paper & Shape Breaker Live in Philadelphia, March 22nd 2014
WHO?: BURNT ONES, RAW McCARTNEY, JACKIE PAPER and SHAPE BREAKER
WHERE?: Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., Philadelphia, PA
WHEN?: March 22nd, 2014
Coming on March 22nd, the brand new Philadelphia venue BOURBON & BRANCH will be taken over with the first Styrofoam Drone Showcase. Bourbon & Branch is nearly ready to open for business, and once it is, it will become one of Philadelphia’s newest venues. Located in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of the city, the venue features a 16 foot-wide stage, not to mention a full bar/restaurant with a heaping menu of food and drink.
While all this is going down, BURNT ONES, the San Francisco-based glam pop trio, are readying their new LP for Castle Face Records. They hooked up with Indianapolis-based fuzz-heaters RAW McCARTNEY for a tour, who just released a new cassette on Tripp Tapes (some highly recommended listening). Joining them in Philly for the night will be SHAPE BREAKER and JACKIE PAPER, two bands who are based in the city limits of Philadelphia. Continuing the trend of new releases, Shape Breaker just set free their vinyl debut on a split 7″ from Chicago label Gary Records. Jackie Paper is a 5-piece band with flutes and synth, joining the stage with their shadowy take on psych rock.
Check in by heading over to our Facebook page for the event!: https://www.facebook.com/events/285053734979267/
See you on March 22nd!

Lantern’s “Talking ‘Bout a Good Time” Mix #1
After featuring our hometown-heroes LANTERN in the 21st installment of our Friday’s Find, the band is abuzz again with the re-release of Rock ‘N’ Roll Rorschach. Cardinal Fuzz Records in Leeds just released the UK version of the album, which comes on gold colored vinyl limited to the first 150 copies. The album also comes with a separate CD including four bonus tracks from the band, not to mention a CD version of the whole album as well. If you haven’t taken the time yet to listen to the album, what the hell are you waiting for? Read our review of it from back in July.
From the desk of Lantern: “To celebrate the UK release of Rock ‘N’ Roll Rorschach, we put together a mix of songs, riffs, and vibes that helped influence the record. We hope you discover some new gems for your head-banging pleasure.” Below are some tracks from their mix, which you can listen to entirely by following this link here >> “Talking ‘Bout a Good Time”
You can purchase the LP now directly from Cardinal Fuzz. Again, the first 150 copies of the record come on gold vinyl and includes a CD with four bonus tracks from the bands previous 7″ singles on Goodbye Boozy and Mammoth Cave. There’s also the standalone CD version that also includes the same four bonus tracks, so the choice is yours!
BUY the newly released LP from Cardinal Fuzz Records (UK) – gold vinyl limited to 150, includes CD w/ 4 bonus tracks !

Dead Luke’s “The Lucharist” Mix #3
Hello. My name is Dead Luke. This here is a compilation of some tunes I dig that was compiled for the fine ladies and gents of the fabulous STYROFOAM DRONE. Please listen completely in order to initiate Divine Transubstantiation in the ritual known as The Lucharist. (Divine Transubstantiation results are not guaranteed.)
If you haven’t heard, today marks the release date of the new Non Travellin’ Band cassette Never Prayed Once, out now on Moon Glyph!
???? – “Poor White Trash”
An unnamed hillbilly lamenting on the hardships of life and death. Did anyone cry for ’em? Maybe if you shed a tear you can render his point moot. Doubt you will though.
The Bugs – “Slide”
I’m not really sure what “doing the slop” may refer to, but all mental images the phrase conjures are pretty interesting. My money is on some sort of maneuver that the South has outlawed by now.
Cliff Cenneth & The Lights – “Come on Shake”
Ol’ Cliffy boy and his merry band of Krauts must have some sort of telekinetic mind control powers, cause every time they order me to “Come on Shake” my legs begin a movin’ on their own accord.
The Jagged Edge – “How Many Times”
Some of my favorite lyrical subjects including Thinketh For Thyself and Thou Can’t Telleth I And I What To Do. All wrapped up with handclaps so reverbed out that it sounds like someone being slapped repeatedly in the face while standing in the Grand Canyon.
Claude Cloud – “One Bone”
Claude Cloud and Co. clawing their way through a frantic R n B opus. You can even count along with ’em if you like.
Lefty and the Leadsmen – “Wildwood Fun”
I read a pretty good description of this one that says you can’t really tell Lefty is referring to the beach or the backwoods. Since I’ve got no beaches in sight and plenty of backwoods at my disposal, I always take the latter opinion.
The Bintangs – “I’m a Man”
These boys from the Netherlands take a different approach to Diddley’s classic by slowing it down and adding a nauseating bass line punctuated by quick flashes of guitar brilliance. Tuff stuff.
The Revels – “Conga Twist”
I’m a serious sucker for bongos and this one’s got a killer groove. Apologies for the skip at the end. Most of my records have started sprouting patches of hair that bear a striking resemblance to my dog’s. I have to pull a miniature Tribble off my needle every time a record ends.
Chico Leverett – “Work Work”
Chico lays down some hard truths about the day to day living most of us have to experience. However, if Daddy Warbucks and Mommy Moneybags are still wiping your chin and footing your bill, then this probably doesn’t apply to you.
Buddy Miller – “Teen Twist”
Mr. Miller probably should have put a safety disclaimer on this one. Twisting this hard can’t be good for soft, developing, adolescent spines.
Bobby Jameson – “Okey Fanokey Baby”
A song about a woman from a swamp riding an alligator, and it’s not even a country tune!
The Paragons – “Abba”
I still can’t decide if these lads are singing about going straight edge for a girl named Abba, or if they are using “Abba” in the New Testament sense to tell a girl that God has commanded them to get it on. Both are equally ridiculous so it doesn’t really matter I suppose.
Billy & the Moonlighters – “Little Indian Girl”
This creeper of a tune could be directed at a lady dressed as Pocahontas for Halloween from the sounds of it.
Me and Them Guys – “I Loved Her So”
Did a cover of this one for “God Takes LSD.” Can’t get enough of it. Take 2 chords, repeat, and you’re set.
The Kings – “It’s The LCB”
I feel like I remember reading a statistic that said you can get away with drunk driving something like 83 times in Wisconsin before you get busted. The Kings get busted by the ol’ Liquor Control Board three separate times in the span of three minutes. Time to pack your bags and move it to Wisco buds.
The Wheels – “Road Block”
Insanebeat by way of Ireland.
The Tigermen – “Tiger Girl”
I wouldn’t be surprised if these chaps only wore orange shirts with black slacks and ate Frosted Flakes for breakfast every morning.
Monty Python – “The Galaxy Song (Cosmic Meltdown Edit)”
Assisting Idle & Co. by putting a few grams of psilocybin in the mix. Gilliam would want it that way.
That’s it for now! Unlike Dead Luke’s previous mixes for Styrofoam Drone, hopefully we won’t have to take this one down. Hope you’ve enjoyed thoroughly!

Looking Ahead: 2013
Hey again, welcome back for 2013. With year-end coverage out of the way and a new year just beginning, it’s time to look ahead! A new year means new plans and this time around we’ve got some fresh ideas to bring your way in 2013. See what’s in store below:
‘Hot Off the Press’
-‘Hot Off the Press’ is going to be our way of telling you about the best and newest vinyl records around. When a label or a band releases a new record and we think you should know, we’ll do our job to keep you posted on when the records are available to buy/preorder. This way you can avoid missing out on your favorite record because it sold out and gives you a better chance to score any limited color vinyl that might be available. Since you all love vinyl as much as we do, it’s a fun way to keep us surrounded by what we love most.
Styrofoam Drone Records
-After three years of blogging at the Styrofoam Drone, one way we thought we could bring things to the next level would be putting out records from the bands we all love. You heard right. At this point in time there is nothing set in stone, however we have been looking around and seeing what type of options are available. There’s also a band or two we’ve been talking with about making this all a reality (wink). That said, if your band has some new material and it’s not on vinyl yet, we should get in touch. We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground, but don’t be shy to send stuff our way either – we are “currently accepting demos” and we’re pretty sure you know what we like to hear. Also if anybody has any suggestions/recommendations/whatever about this idea, please get in touch > styrofoamdrone AT gmail DOT com
Shows in Philadelphia
-If you’re a touring band and looking to set up a show in Philadelphia, our friends at Phonographic Arts can always help you find what you are looking for. Either get in touch with them directly or we can help you!
Other Miscellaneous Upgrades/Updates
-We have gotten our hands on a brand new HD camcorder which means the quality of the videos in our live show posts should be better than ever
-Regular review/SOTD posting continues as normal this week
-SXSW plans? If we knew how to set something up we would. Philadelphia band showcase? See you there?
-Unrelated to anything here: NHL hockey is back. We’re psyched!
That’s all for today, but hopefully this gets you ready for the upcoming year. Let us know what you think about these new ideas in the comments below! Any feedback would be great!
Plateaus – “Do It For You” Video + Interview
PLATEAUS – who were responsible for one of our favorite 7″ singles last year – are back at it again. This time they are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming 7″ from Hozac Records. To hold us over in the meantime, they just set free this brand new music video for the song “Do It For You” which will appear on the new 7″. We had a minute to catch up with the band and ask them about their new single and the new video – see what they had to say below.
How does your new single on Hozac compare with your earlier single on Art Fag?
Kevin: Quite well, I think. Apples and oranges? I dunno.
Jon: The new one has the whole band on it instead of just me and Kevin, Chris even sings the A-side. I think sonically this single is more abrasive than the last one.
The new music video for “Do It For You” is pretty rad. What was the inspiration for such an exhilarating video?
Chris: I guess the inspiration for the video would be the song. We gave the song to our friends Dusty and Derrik and after listening to it that was the concept they came up with.
And how exactly was that video created?
Chris: The video was made by Dusty Dirtweed of Mushroom Necklace and Derrik Acosta of Mega 64. Dusty made pretty much everything you see in the video by hand. He made almost everything out of pizza boxes and glue, then painted them. After everything was made him and Derrik made a set in his garage and filmed the video. Derrik then took all the shots and edited the photos into an animation.
What can we expect from Plateaus in the future after this new 7″?
Kevin: We are going out to Chicago real soon for the Hozac Blackout Fest, we’re playing a bunch of shows on the way out and on the way back. It’s gonna be fun, Red Cross and Roky Erickson! Also stoked to crack a Mike’s Hard with San Diego hometown heroes “The Spider Fever.”
Chris: We have another 7″ coming up shortly after the Hozac one, and an LP coming out this fall (both on Art Fag).
Jon: Expect to see us on the road more for sure.
There you have it folks. Plateaus seem to have their work cut out for them between now and the start of the summer. In the meantime the video above for “Do It For You” should hold you over until they start dropping these new records. Sit tight!

A Brief Conversation With Pamela

San Francisco’s Pamela are putting together their next release. I sat in with them last Friday at Temple Randolph Studios to observe their first session for the new record. It is being recorded by Jasper Leach and Brian Davy, of the Myonics and Symbolic Jews, on a vintage Tascam Midistudio 688 cassette recorder. Continue reading “A Brief Conversation With Pamela”
ROAD TO RUIN FEST, 4/20-22 in Philadelphia
Today I am proudly introducing the ROAD TO RUIN FEST. For those of you who might not know, the Road To Ruin Fest is a completely independent punk/ rock & roll festival to be held in Philadelphia. The fest is being booked without the help of corporate sponsorship and everything is coming out of the pockets of the organizers. The organizers include Evil Weevil Records, Chikara Wrestling and Dead Industry.
Road To Ruin is a three day festival that will take place in Philadelphia during the weekend of April 20th to the 22nd. Each day will be held at a different venue and each day features a slew of different bands, ranging from mainly local acts to New Jersey, New York, Washington DC and beyond. Believe it or not, there is also a wrestling portion of the weekend which will take place on the 21st. Now do yourself a favor and imagine that combination – endless amounts of performing bands with a wrestling match right in the middle of all the action. Definitely sounds like a memorable weekend.
