Perfect for these scorching summer days is the debut single from Southern California beach punks PLATEAUS. The 7″ comes from Art Fag Recordings and quickly leaves you begging for more of their heat-stricken, discontented beach punk.
Included on the 7″ are three brand new songs, all of which make up what is probably the shortest and sweetest three song single we’ve ever had the pleasure of covering. Things begin on the lazy sounding slacker scuzz of the self-titled opener, like these dudes roll out of bed every morning and go scanning the sand looking for some fun, but the end result is always big fat failure. Clearly this is a familiar feeling to them as they mention second and third tries, however they don’t let their lack of success get them down. This minute-and-a-half beach punk jam is about as perfectly simplistic and minimalist as you could make it, with a stomping rhythm and a flawlessly played guitar psych-out that not only screams surf, it’s just ecstatically perfect in every way possible – from it’s ideal placement down to the way it indicates the climax of the song, Plateaus easily struck gold with this one. Lots of it.
Continuing the salty scuzz for the rest of the 7″, “Suzy” sounds even more sludgy and crumby than the first, while “Polluted Skull” is when the real frustration comes through. Lead singer Kevin Gist is clearly upset with all the bullshit and drama that goes down and he’s here now to stand up against it. He calls out the haters and challenges them to bitch about something else for a change, except it’s to no avail as nobody ever dares to step outside the box and lead the pack – everybody just cowers away to what they already know. That’s okay though because Plateaus have shut them up themselves and with that they’ve given us a single to remember. Promise for their future? I don’t think there’s anyway around that. Catch them on tour this August on the west coast with Heavy Hawaii and see just how quickly they convince you.
