Burnt Ones, Jackie Paper, Raw McCartney, Shape Breaker Live in Philadelphia (03/22/14)

Bourbon & Branch, Philadelphia’s newest venue space, was taken over on Saturday night by the very first Styrofoam Drone Showcase. Burnt Ones and Raw McCartney came into town from San Francisco and Indianapolis respectively, while Shape Breaker and Jackie Paper provided the hometown entertainment. Burnt Ones are on the road for their upcoming LP on Castle Face Records, an album that should be available for mail order any day now.

Take a look below for a video apiece from each band that played on Saturday. If that’s not enough, you can find more videos from the show right here (keep checking back!)

Shape Breaker – “Spellbound”

Shape Breaker closed their set with the track from their recent split 7″ on Gary Records, “Spellbound.” Psychedelic and punk vibes are prominent in their sound, more of which you can listen to right here.

Raw McCartney – “Born to Ride”

“Born to Ride” is a track from Raw McCartney’s recent Introducing cassette on Chicago’s Tripp Tapes. It’s loaded with the most fuzz as these guys stop at nothing to melt your face off.

Jackie Paper

Jackie Paper wasted no time with their take on folk-inspired psych rock. Fluttery flutes and grainy psych washes dominated their set, building their songs up into a monumental affair.

Burnt Ones

Burnt Ones brought their own synth-driven stoner pop, showcasing a bit from their upcoming LP on Castle Face titled Gift. It’s officially released on March 25th by the label, so keep your eyes peeled for that in the Castle Face Records store.

Song of the Day #49: Cheerleader – “New Daze”

cheerleader new daze 2014 sotd 49

Hailing from Philadelphia, CHEERLEADER is a new local band who self-describe their sound as “hazy electro-pop.” The quintet recently began releasing new tracks on their Soundcloud, along with a video for their lead single “New Daze.” The video caught the eyes of folks at NME and MTV, both of which deemed Cheerleader as a sort of “best new buzz band.”

“New Daze” is their most memorable single yet, led by fuzzy electronics and an icy atmosphere that keeps things cool. Bass lines sound fat and muddy, complemented by colorful swells of warbled guitars and electronics. The song becomes increasingly detailed as it plays out, wrapping us in a wave of speckled electronics that are clean and crystal-clear. Pretty vocal hooks come drenched in a palpable layer of haze, leading us on a particularly heavenly ride as we scrape our foreheads on the clouds. Listen to “New Daze” right below, then check out Cheerleader on Soundcloud for a few more tracks from their set of demos. If you’ve previously dug anything from their Philly neighbors in Cough Cool, or maybe even Painted Palms, then this stuff is for you! If you’re in Philadelphia, catch them on March 3rd at Kung Fu Necktie!

Styrofoam Drone Presents: Burnt Ones, Raw McCartney, Jackie Paper & Shape Breaker Live in Philadelphia, March 22nd 2014

styrofoam drone presents show flyer march 22 2014

WHO?: BURNT ONES, RAW McCARTNEY, JACKIE PAPER and SHAPE BREAKER
WHERE?: Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., Philadelphia, PA
WHEN?: March 22nd, 2014

Coming on March 22nd, the brand new Philadelphia venue BOURBON & BRANCH will be taken over with the first Styrofoam Drone Showcase. Bourbon & Branch is nearly ready to open for business, and once it is, it will become one of Philadelphia’s newest venues. Located in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of the city, the venue features a 16 foot-wide stage, not to mention a full bar/restaurant with a heaping menu of food and drink.

While all this is going down, BURNT ONES, the San Francisco-based glam pop trio, are readying their new LP for Castle Face Records. They hooked up with Indianapolis-based fuzz-heaters RAW McCARTNEY for a tour, who just released a new cassette on Tripp Tapes (some highly recommended listening). Joining them in Philly for the night will be SHAPE BREAKER and JACKIE PAPER, two bands who are based in the city limits of Philadelphia. Continuing the trend of new releases, Shape Breaker just set free their vinyl debut on a split 7″ from Chicago label Gary Records. Jackie Paper is a 5-piece band with flutes and synth, joining the stage with their shadowy take on psych rock.

Woodsman, Lantern, School Girl Live in Philadelphia (02/07/14)

Currently based in Brooklyn, Denver-born psych crew WOODSMAN just dropped their third studio album on Fire Talk Records (more on that later). Their current tour just concluded over the past weekend with their record release show in New York City. The night before they made a stop in Philadelphia, bringing their experimental psych rock to Kung Fu Necktie on a Friday night. Philly-based band SCHOOL GIRL kicked things off. They specialize in a form of primitive protopunk, playing their second show to date. Grungy punk n’ roll trio LANTERN followed up, playing some tracks from their 2013 debut and a few other choice nuggets. It was their first show in awhile but they were right on point, evidenced by these videos after the jump: Continue reading “Woodsman, Lantern, School Girl Live in Philadelphia (02/07/14)”

PURLING HISS Record Release Show Live in Philadelphia (04/05/13)

purling hiss live in philadelphia 040513 head

Plenty of shows and events took place in the city of Philadelphia this past Friday night, but anybody who ended up at the sold out Record Release show of PURLING HISS at Johnny Brenda’s knew they made the best of their night. Water On Mars was released by Drag City Records on March 19th, which only meant that this celebration for the record was long overdue. Joining Purling Hiss on the stage for the night were hometown heroes SPACIN’ along with the Chicago-based AXIS:SOVA (who just released a new 7″ on Philly-based label Richie Records), who together set us up to endure one hell of a damaging performance. Looking Ahead: 2013

Hey again, welcome back for 2013. With year-end coverage out of the way and a new year just beginning, it’s time to look ahead! A new year means new plans and this time around we’ve got some fresh ideas to bring your way in 2013. See what’s in store below:

‘Hot Off the Press’
-‘Hot Off the Press’ is going to be our way of telling you about the best and newest vinyl records around. When a label or a band releases a new record and we think you should know, we’ll do our job to keep you posted on when the records are available to buy/preorder. This way you can avoid missing out on your favorite record because it sold out and gives you a better chance to score any limited color vinyl that might be available. Since you all love vinyl as much as we do, it’s a fun way to keep us surrounded by what we love most.

Styrofoam Drone Records
-After three years of blogging at the Styrofoam Drone, one way we thought we could bring things to the next level would be putting out records from the bands we all love. You heard right. At this point in time there is nothing set in stone, however we have been looking around and seeing what type of options are available. There’s also a band or two we’ve been talking with about making this all a reality (wink). That said, if your band has some new material and it’s not on vinyl yet, we should get in touch. We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground, but don’t be shy to send stuff our way either – we are “currently accepting demos” and we’re pretty sure you know what we like to hear. Also if anybody has any suggestions/recommendations/whatever about this idea, please get in touch > styrofoamdrone AT gmail DOT com

Shows in Philadelphia
-If you’re a touring band and looking to set up a show in Philadelphia, our friends at Phonographic Arts can always help you find what you are looking for. Either get in touch with them directly or we can help you!

Other Miscellaneous Upgrades/Updates
-We have gotten our hands on a brand new HD camcorder which means the quality of the videos in our live show posts should be better than ever
-Regular review/SOTD posting continues as normal this week
-SXSW plans? If we knew how to set something up we would. Philadelphia band showcase? See you there?
-Unrelated to anything here: NHL hockey is back. We’re psyched!

That’s all for today, but hopefully this gets you ready for the upcoming year. Let us know what you think about these new ideas in the comments below! Any feedback would be great!

Cold Showers, Cousins Live in Philadelphia (10/01/12)

COLD SHOWERS and COUSINS each came a long way to play for us in Philadelphia last night. Cold Showers hail from out west in Los Angeles, while Cousins come all the way from Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Also joining them was Coke Weed from Bar Harbor, Maine and (((Taco))) from no other than Philadelphia. Together this line up destroyed eardrums for the mere fifteen people upstairs at Kung Fu Necktie, leaving me with no other question than where the hell were you last night? Right now Cold Showers are in the process of touring for their upcoming debut LP on Dais Records, Love and Regret, which officially drops on October 9th. They played for us a generous portion of the album, which also includes some tracks from older Cold Showers singles we’ve been raving about for the past year. As for Cousins, the friendly duo ripped through a handful of tracks from their album “The Palm at the End of the Mind,” who are probably responsible for the majority of my hearing loss as I type this passage. Check these videos below and see just how the show played out. Continue reading “Cold Showers, Cousins Live in Philadelphia (10/01/12)”

Spider Bags Live in Philadelphia (09/21/12)

Dan McGee and the SPIDER BAGS tore shit up this weekend in Philadelphia at Kung Fu Necktie. They played upstairs in an apartment which made for a blazing sweatfest, which is probably the only real way to experience the Bags in a live setting anyway. They headlined the show, following the destructive acts of some like-minded bands like the Golden Boys, the Limes, and Philly’s brand new scuzz-punks the Residuels (whose set I unfortunately missed). The Bags were forced to finish by 11pm, so they plowed through a near half-hour set, gracing our ears with the rock & roll monstrosities that make up their latest album, the epic Shake My Head. On top of those songs, they even played the entirety of their Papa Was a Shithead 7″ from Sophomore Lounge Records.

By now the Bags have certainly come a long way, from the twangy country-punk of A Celebration of Hunger to this brand new and electrifying offering from Odessa Records. Witness a lethal batch of these tracks come to life right below, followed by your solemn vow that you will always go and see Chapel Hill’s Spider Bags each and every time they come to your town. Also, don’t forget to check the rest of the videos from the show right here. Continue reading “Spider Bags Live in Philadelphia (09/21/12)”
