FAT CREEPS – Must Be Nice LP:
Sophomore Lounge Records is dropping a new LP from Fat Creeps. Must Be Nice is loaded with 10 tracks that are ripe with jarring guitars, bright, breathy vocals and crashing rhythms. Streaming above, “He Comes in Loudly” is an obvious highlight. It’s bursting with a variety of elements, including glowing guitar waves, pleasant vocal interplay and wonky bass lines. They create a driving and angular sound in one effortless shot, providing us with a truly infectious song that’s reminiscent of Grass Widow or Warpaint. You can get the LP from Sophomore Lounge now.
BUFFALO TOOTH – Gardeners of the Devil’s Lettuce LP:
Released by Captcha Records in California, Gardeners of the Devil’s Lettuce is the debut LP from San Francisco trio Buffalo Tooth. The LP comes limited to 500 pieces on black and white splatter vinyl, containing a hot mess of speedy, metal-tinged punk and 70’s-flavored rock fueled by relentless fuzz guitars. Spider Bags, No Other, Tygaton Live in Philadelphia (08/20/14)
As you may already know, the SPIDER BAGS just dropped their fourth and first album for Merge Records, Frozen Letter. They stopped in Philadelphia last night at Boot & Saddle to play songs from the LP, joined on stage by Philly trio NO OTHER and local psych-punks TYGATON. No Other released their EP I Believe In Werner Herzog in 2013, while Tygaton have a small collection of material available on Bandcamp. We caught the Bags last time (?) they were in Philadelphia, where they were touring for their previous album on Odessa Records, Shake My Head. Witness their psych-flavored country-punk debauchery, executed in full-form right below, along with an accompanying video of No Other. Now when the Bags are in your town, you know what to do.
No Other – “Opaque”
These ladies hit hard and heavy with their psych-flared take on punk – luckily for us they’ve got a new 7″ single coming soon, courtesy of Negative Fun Records in North Carolina. Witness them play “Opaque,” the B-side to their 7″, then catch them live for a full dose of their sound – they were throwing around some new material and boy was it monstrous.
Spider Bags – “Summer of ’79” and “Japanese Vacation”
The Bags began their set with a couple of choice tracks from their previous albums, namely “Friday Night” and “Que Viva El Rocanrol,” before proceeding into the new material. They started with their cover of John Wesley Coleman’s “Summer of ’79” before jumping headfirst into “Japanese Vacation.”
Spider Bags – “Back With You Again in the World”
They followed up with the introductory track to Frozen Letter – this one quickly stirs the pot with it’s stomping rhythm, led by Dan McGee’s squealing guitar work and rugged howling.
Spider Bags – “Eyes of Death”
They nearly ended their set with “Eyes of Death,” a staggering psychedelic anthem that is the closing statement on Frozen Letter. Despite the venue’s time restraints they had time for one final song after “Eyes of Death,” so the Bags quickly ripped through “Papa Was a Shithead” before calling it a night. And what a night it was – you can see some more video from the show right here.

Ville Fantome – Anything 4 U 7″ EP
VILLE FANTOME is crafting killer bluesy-garage surf rock 500 miles off the coast in a basement in Strasbourg, France. His first release, Anything 4 U, is as haunted as the band name suggests and is truly impressive considering it was conceived immaculately; jerZ Dietrich employed no overdubs or tapes. A lone loop pedal enabled its multi-instrument birth. The end result is a hypnotic, genre-blending collection of three new songs. Continue reading “Ville Fantome – Anything 4 U 7″ EP”
Spider Bags – Frozen Letter
The SPIDER BAGS fourth full-length album, Frozen Letter, may have just nabbed the award for best psychedelic-garage rock summer jam of 2014 (if such a thing even exists in these troubled times). A concise-but-concentrated dose of riffage that channels the spirit of both classic and even punk rock with just the right dash of wooziness at times; it’s a record that channels the chaotic spirit of such seminal works as Alex Chilton’s Like Flies on Sherbert to these ears. The Anomalys – s/t LP + Deadline Blues 7″
Internationally recognized as a primitive, psychotic force of rock n’ roll, THE ANOMALYS initially released their self-titled debut through Slovenly Recordings in June of 2010. The nine-song assault of blues-flavored, punk rock savagery can definitely be summed up in one word – raw. Now they’re back with a new 7″ EP from the label, Deadline Blues. Continue reading “The Anomalys – s/t LP + Deadline Blues 7″”
