Song of the Day #28: Meat Market – “TNT”

Oakland, California surf-punks MEAT MARKET drop their first release on vinyl, made up of some old and familiar tracks along with some brand new ones. The LP comes from Under the Gun Records in Los Angeles in a run of just 500 pressings.

The LP originally dropped as a cassette tape, which means we’re about to give this album the double-plug. The new, self-titled LP features ten tracks of their smart and sensible surf rock, taking a handful of the songs from the original cassette and filling them out immensely. The LP sounds so much better it shouldn’t even be a question, because now we get these fully-realized and fun-loving surf rock anthems like “TNT” to fill our hearts with joy. A song like this is overflowing with positive vibes and hook-heavy tendencies, led by warm, sunny guitars with a glinting, surfy twang. Care-free vocal hooks sit on top of the shredded guitars, supplying the song with a dose of innocence that is nothing short of catchy. Underneath there’s a relentless stomp that drives the track, which solidifies nicely at the end to show off a punching punk edge.

Song of the Day #20: Guantanamo Baywatch – “Boomerenga”

GUANTANAMO BAYWATCH are currently putting the finishing touches on their 2nd full length LP. The album, titled Chest Crawl, drops May 22nd from the Dirtnap Records label which is surely a fitting home for their grimy, psyched-out strand of surf rock. “Boomerenga” is an excellent example of this sound being put on display. The song is guided along by twangy guitars with an evil edge while swift percussion and chunky bass lines work to keep the rhythm. These elements all combine for a ridiculously sloppy (and somehow sexy – did you see that album art??) blend of garage and surf rock that sounds particularly careless while also sounding wet. The lead guitar slithers and slides across the track which really helps create those slippery, unsettling vibes. Throughout the rest of Chest Crawl the Portland trio offers up plenty of tricks, the most notable being those blood-pumping instrumental tracks which have a truly vintage sound. See what they’re all about in the track below!

Ketamines – Spaced Out

Hailing from Calgary, the one and only KETAMINES are about to drop their debut LP “Spaced Out”. It’s a split release from both Mammoth Cave Recording Co. in Canada and Southpaw Records in the United States, filled to the brim with a charming form of psyched-out “bubblegum” garage-pop. The Summer Twins – The Summer Twins

Burger Records has just released The Summer Twins self-titled LP. On this album The Summer Twins incorporate elements of surf and doo-wop into their garage rock sound. It was recorded entirely onto analog tape. This record has the typical retro sound of a Burger release, but it does not share the typical lo-fi quality. It sounds more like something produced by Phil Spector than something recorded in a hippie’s garage. Continue reading “The Summer Twins – The Summer Twins”

Ty Segall – Singles 2007-2010

Goner Records recently released Ty Segall – Singles 2007-2010 on a double vinyl LP. Over the past five years Ty Segall has been one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most prolific musicians, releasing six full length albums in between a seemingly non-stop touring schedule. In addition to his long playing records, he has also released a never ending stream of 7-inch singles, split records, live recordings, and limited releases. Not only does this album collect a few of those out of print rarities into one convenient package, but it also provides an excellent overview of the musician’s early career by tracking his meteoric rise from his humble lo-fi surf recordings to the more developed sound of his later work.
