Heavy Times – Too Many Dreamers EP

What we have here is a brand new and totally under-announced EP from our favorite Chicago bros HEAVY TIMES. This is one of those things that drops way too silently and it makes you wonder why they wouldn’t put it out there more. I guess that’s because of blogs like this. Song of the Day #11

Well this one just seemed too appropriate for today. NATURAL CHILD release their brand new, debut full length to the world, and on what better day than 4/20? Follow that link for a nice preview of the album, but if you’re unfamiliar please stick around and listen to this one we got here. It comes from their first 7″ on the Infinity Cat label and it’s a hell of an opening statement. How many times have you heard a concept like this turned into a fist-in-air anthem? Probably not even once (but if I’m wrong please enlighten me). They blend hilarity with garage rock and walk the line like champs, almost as if they drew it themselves. However, if anything is true, it’s that this 7″ is one of the most solid and satisfying I’ve ever spun on my turntable.

The Prefab Messiahs – Franz Kafka 7″

Believe it or not, this PREFAB MESSIAHS 7″ contains songs that were originally penned back in 1982. They have been uncovered from their original Wormtown Recordings home and somehow magically fit right into what we’re usually focusing on around here. Song of the Day #9

Thanks to our pals from Evil Weevil Records who endlessly produce awesome local (not exactly this time) bands, we have a little something here we thought was worth your attention. Seemingly driven by loneliness is the debut demo 7″ from Brooklyn’s own BIG EYES. This female fronted band takes on a gritty punk attitude based somewhere between scuzzy garage rock and organized indie-pop, but neither of the two overshadow the other. They balance things out quite nicely, with humongous guitar hooks and enough tension to keep you stressin’ out for days – but in the best way possible. Whatever that means.

Song of the Day #7

Mississippi punk duo BASS DRUM OF DEATH have their debut full length hitting the shelves April 12th from Fat Possum and Inflated Records, collectively.

These guys come from the Cats Purring Collective just like Dead Gaze, which just goes to show all the talent that’s constantly brewing down there. Together John and Colin recorded this album in a series of basements, and upon listening this immediately becomes obvious. Their buzzy sound is buried in reverb and as frantic and energetic as can be, but at the same time dynamic because each track of the album reveals something new, but it’s not like this sound is groundbreaking by any means – they’re just good at it. They take the usual destructive approach to garage-punk, singing about heathenish things like trying to score with religious girls. Awesome? Certainly. Check out the opening track “Nerve Jamming” now.
