Dating back to the summer of 2009 is when BAD VIBRATIONS were officially born. They’re a trashy punk-rock power trio hailing from Halifax in Nova Scotia, and this 7″ is their second release to date, coming from the mysterious Sewercide Records label. Tranzmitors – You Get Around 7″
To be honest, before coming across this 7″ I had never heard of these guys. Before even finishing the 7″ on it’s first time around, it was already a done deal. Maybe that’s because of the enthusiastic and grandiose pop vibes, or just how the record is overflowing with material that is sure to crack a smile on any face. Pregnant – Pregnant
What’s up people. Hopefully you’ve been enjoying this week thus far. If so, that’s great, because it’s only about to get better, so keep reading. Today we’ve got the debut LP from Brooklyn’s own PREGNANT, and boy do these guys deliver. Their new LP comes from the Burn Books imprint, which is also based in Brooklyn, and it looks as if it’s the labels first official release. Pregnant is made up of three members, Stefanie Bridges (bass & vox), Kevin Manion (guitar & vox), and Ian T. (drums) who together create short outbursts of high energy, dismantling punk rock that treads right along the fine line between punk and hardcore punk. Raspy vocals and fast paced guitar hooks dominate this record, giving it an overall heavy sound, but the staggering guitars sometimes turn into joyous leads like in the song “Help!”.
None of the songs go anywhere past the three minute mark, with the exception of the final track “Wanna See My Gun?”. This means the record ends pretty quickly, but the intensity is surely palpable within each of these ten Pregnant songs. Since it ends so fast, chances are you’re going to spin this thing again and again, because let’s be serious people, this is quality punk rock. Now it’s your turn to find out, and you can do so simply by listening to these highlights from the record below. Leave some comments and let us know what you’re thinking, and please don’t forget to support the good guys at Burn Books.

Purling Hiss – Public Service Announcement
What’s up dudes. We’ve got the new full length player from PURLING HISS today, and it’s quite a brain-burner. Mike Polizze, who is from Philadelphia, is the main man behind the music, but this isn’t the only place you can find his work. You’ve probably also heard of Bird of Maya if you’re already familiar with Purling Hiss, but it seems as if he’s been concentrating on Purling Hiss a bit more lately. This is the second full-length to come from the band this year, only this time it’s a bit different from previous efforts.
Before this album, most Purling Hiss songs were long and drawn out heavy psych-jams that left you wondering what the hell just took place. This time around they went with more traditional song formats, keeping tracks no longer than the five minute mark. But don’t worry, they certainly didn’t get rid of the loud psych-y stuff. It’s a good thing too. Hopefully Polizze keeps it up at this moonlighting job, because these new Purling Hiss songs totally rock.
Things start off on a familiar note with this album. There’s no point where you’ll be wondering who this stuff came from. The first track “Run From the City” starts off right away with a screeching guitar hook, and soon enough you’ll begin to notice the song building up more and more. The squeal of Polizze’s guitar is enough to make your heart sing as he keeps tearing it up with that same hook. It doesn’t get much radder than that – a mind-blowing riff played over and over again while the drums and everything else tries to match the intensity. If anything is apparent after listening to this song, it’s that this dude has some serious talent. Next is the instrumental track “Porch Dude/ Slight Return”, and it’s a great way to follow up. This one has a funky urban feel to it. The guitars and whatnot continue to swirl over your head helping to progress the song, and this one should keep you grooving without a doubt. Then comes “Don’t Even Try It”, which is what music in a daze should sound like. It’s especially dreamy and hazy, which brings me to say that if warmth had a sound, this would be it. The shape shifting acoustic guitar goes great with the “woo-ooh-ooh”, making for a great sing along if you know the lyrics.
Skipping ahead to track five, “Ojos Locos” – which translates to “crazy eyes” in English. The first 30 seconds or so don’t really hint at what’s to come, wait til about 45 seconds in and the fun begins. Suddenly there’s a happy ska flair that comes along with that bouncy guitar riff, which makes the song upbeat but kind of muffled at the same time. It’s a strange balance, but once again this band dazzles as they manage to make it work out so nicely. Either way the happy vibes are flowing! Moving ahead to “Beautiful Earth Creature”, this song is bound to strike a soft spot. You can’t exactly understand everything Polizze is singing, but there’s some parts that are easier to decipher than others. The highlight of this song though comes in the lead guitar work, just listen below and you’ll know what I mean. Following that comes “Malice in Wonderland”, which definitely qualifies as the most obscure and out-of-line track on the album. I’m not entirely sure what’s making all those heavy sounds, but it certainly helps create some intense, vivid visualizations. The final two tracks “Doghouse” and “1976” shouldn’t be ignored, I’m just running out of time. Check out what I’ve left for ya below and leave some comments. I want more comments people can’t you tell!!? Let’s get the Styrofoam Drone community up and running!!

Ex-Fag Cop – Bat Shit 7″
Got some interesting stuff for you guys today. It’s a 7″ from a band called EX-FAG COP. At one point their name was just Fag Cop, but they recently added the “Ex” part for whatever reason. This 7″ of theirs comes from the Bat Shit Records label, a label dealing with all things punk. Just check out some of the songs on the Myspace and you’ll understand what Bat Shit Records are about right away – gritty, no rules whatsoever, in-yr-face ripping punk action with unintelligible lyrics and the sure ability to induce headaches from beginning to end. Yeah.
Three-quarters of this 7″ are bound to give you that headache I just mentioned while that last part is strangely more catchy and listenable than the rest. Not that the first three songs aren’t listenable, they just went with a much more inviting sound on the last track – almost as if they weren’t trying to make your ears bleed from the very second the song begins. The first three come off so loud and angry that it might just prove to be too much for the listener. With that being said, I would probably stick to listening to this one with the volume lower or else you might destroy yr ears…and yr speakers. That wouldn’t be good. The third track “Matrixcide” is a ripping punk onslaught with enough caffeine to keep you up all night, while “Remembered Future…” is dominated by a scrappy guitar hook over top of completely indecipherable lyrics. Check this stuff out right below, and there’s more on their Myspace if yr curious.

Dead Meat – The King 7″
Hey all. We’ve got something nice for ya today. It’s the debut 7″ from DEAD MEAT. These guys originally came from Miami, but they relocated and are now based out of San Francisco. Before leaving Miami, the band forged some friendships with bands you’re probably already familiar with. The boys of Surfer Blood turn out to be old friends with Dead Meat, as well as with the Surfer Blood side-project Weird Wives. They too have showed their friendship with Dead Meat on their Blogspot page. That page is great for some insightful information, and that Kelly Williams website has a ton of cool stuff on it – who I am pretty sure is responsible for their cover art of the 7″, as seen above.
The 7″ comes packed with three Dead Meat songs, each dripping with a murky, foreboding attitude that is definitely far from the happy side of things. The heavy, grungy guitars dominate the songs as lead singer Joe Santarpia howls with much anguish, and you’ll learn pretty quickly that there’s absolutely nothing to be happy about. There’s even an “I don’t give a fuck” kind of attitude weaved into the songs, but I’m sure that’s far from true if you could ask the band members themselves. If they didn’t give a fuck they probably wouldn’t be in a band at all, know what I mean? The 7″ isn’t due out until the 30th of November, but we’ve got some stuff to hold you over until then. Check out these songs below, and then head over to their Myspace for some other songs and even some downloads.

Young Adults – Black Hole
If you haven’t heard of YOUNG ADULTS yet, stick around and learn a thing or two. These guys hail from Allston, Massachusetts, and they formed not very long ago in October of 2009. They definitely play a large part in the ever-growing scene that is constantly expanding up in the Boston area – which also includes a few other bands that have been featured on the Drone, like DOOMSTAR! and Girlfriends.
These bands all certainly have a little bit of something in common, and it’s not just their music. Part of it would be that they’re all responsible for the emerging punk and garage rock scene that is taking the Boston area by storm right now. There’s going to be a video documentary on this happening up in Boston, and Young Adults play a big role in that documentary. A film production company in Massachusetts called ExNoise, in association with Foundwaves, will be shooting the documentary and it’s going to be funded by Kickstarter. This will certainly be an interesting watch – can’t wait to hear more about it!
But yeah, put all that information aside for a second, and learn that the Young Adults debut LP is upon us! Yes, it’s true! In this coming November, AMDISCS – a record label based out of Prague in the Czech Republic – will release this debut LP in an edition of 500, and it will also be available digitally in places like iTunes. But seriously, I know you guys are all going to buy the vinyl, so I probably don’t even need that little digital format blurb – right?!
Buy it, and you get nearly 40 minutes of a heavy, glowing mix of garage rock and punk that’s just too good to forget about. Glowing because of all the invigorating, ambient lead guitar that dominates songs like “Let Us Out”, “Wasting Time”, “Rip it Up”, “Impression”, and “Campfires”, amongst many others – and punk because these guys just tear shit up without ever turning around to see the destruction they just caused. They even cover The Wipers song “Over the Edge”, which definitely confirms their punky influences. But no matter what you’re into, you should definitely free up some time to listen to these songs below. All three are highly recommended and shortly after listening, you’ll be eagerly awaiting this debut LP of theirs (as well as the documentary!). Hopefully this growing Boston scene will continue churning out new jams like these.

Far-Out Fangtooth – Pathways 7″
Hailing from Philadelphia, PA is the one and only FAR-OUT FANGTOOTH. These guys just put out their debut 7″ on Philadelphia label Ian Records, and it looks like it’s their first official release to be unleashed on the world. The blog in that link hasn’t been updated in quite some time, but it looks as if another Ian Records release is due out soon enough. The only problem is I couldn’t really find a link to buy this Far-Out Fangtooth single anywhere. I happened to stumble upon it during a record store trip just the other day, so unless you have time to get to yr local record store, I don’t how else to get this one. Especially if yr not from Philadelphia. I’m sure they’ll have a way to buy it soon enough.
So for starters, I was slightly confused when I first went to listen to this 7″. I’m pretty sure they have the label stickers on the wrong sides. The side that says “Pathways” plays “Why Don’t You Cry”, and vice-versa. It’s not anything Earth-shattering, but I’m sure they didn’t mean to do this. “Pathways” is supposed to be the A-side (I think – might be wrong about that), and it starts out on kind of a slow note. It’s going to take a few listens for this stuff to grow on you, that is if you think you can get into it. Until about 30 seconds in, this sounds like just another scuzzy lo-fi song, but then an ambient and invigorating lead guitar takes control, as things begin to liven up a bit. Good thing too, because the singing probably wasn’t going to help change that. That lead guitar is complemented by other twangy guitar rhythms and bass lines alike, on top of relentless, crashing cymbals. Check out the other side of this 7″ right below – it’s a heavy, grungy guitar-driven jam out. Then you can hear “Pathways” right on the Far-Out Fangtooth Myspace.

Spider Bags – Take It Easy Tonite 7″
Was anybody else aware that a new Spider Bags 7″ was upon us? I certainly had no idea until I received an e-mail yesterday about their brand new 7″ from Churchkey Records. It’s still not due out for a good chunk of time – until about midway through October on the 19th – but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about it! This is their first release since their second full-length effort, “Goodbye Cruel World, Hello Crueler World”, and as the e-mail claims (and rightfully so!), “Take It Easy Tonite continues the quality output.” Two awesomely produced and new ramshackle punk-rock-country throw downs (just like the Spider Bags you know and love) put out on beautiful blue and violet swirled vinyl in a limited edition of 100, and then some on the traditional black vinyl. Now you just gotta wait til October 19th…
According to this e-mail, the song on the A-side (“Take It Easy Tonite”) is about the Spider Bag’s undying love for partying while they’re on tour. Normally when the band pulls in late to their next stop on tour, they claim that they’re gonna “take it easy” for the night. Unfortunately for the Bags, it never seems to work out this way. You might be able to figure that out by their music, too, because once you get to the bar, it’s kind of difficult to just “take it easy”. Lead singer and guitarist Dan McGee had this to say about the nature of the song, “It sounded kind of fun to write a hard-rocking pop song around the idea of ‘taking it easy.'” So as you can see, they just basically took this idea and ran with it. The result? This wonderful track “Take It Easy Tonite”, which was carefully mixed for over an entire month. You can hear it in the recording too – epic, eyebrow-searing guitars, echoing drums, and an attitude that’s sure to make you want smash everything in sight – check it out below!
Then the B-side, “Shaunda (What’s My Sign?)”, kind of goes off in a not-so-similar direction. They slow things down for a dirge-like feel, and as it’s said perfectly in this e-mail, “it’s a singeing breath of strung-out fire that’s sure to leave a mark – a late-night rock ‘n’ roll slow-burner.” Normally I’d come up with my own description, but whoever wrote this shit totally nailed it. Props! They even went as far as including overdubs of backwards drumming, which if you’re paying attention close enough, you can certainly hear it. Now I’m curious why they would want to do that. And I almost completely forgot to mention that this B-side features the singing of Bryan Schmitz – a dude you might remember from The Golden Boys. The Bags take control of the instruments while Mr. Schmitz sings away. Normally I’d stream this track for ya as well, but it’s out of my hands this time. October 19th isn’t that far away!
