Women in Prison – Strange Waves 7″

Add another band to the list that’s awesome and comes from Texas (which is where we should all be at some point this week). WOMEN IN PRISON just released their debut 7″ from Hozac Records, and it’s a face-beating kick in the ass of raging punk that will throw you down and continue to kick you while you’re helplessly on the ground. Song of the Day #3

Coming from the Bathetic Records imprint towards the end of the month is a brand new 7″ from HIGH WOLF. By now most of you probably know the story of this French-born, seemingly nomadic psychedelic mastermind, and this is his latest work to date. “Free Your Energy Field” is a looping psychedelic mess that sounds both equally ritualistic and ethnic, and is clearly heavy on the repetition. It’s not a surprise if you get lost in the buzzing drone and the relentless swirling of so many sounds – the surprising part would be if you were actually able to make sense of it all. If you’re looking for something obscure yet minimal that also seems strikingly complex, look no further.

Estrogen Highs – Cycles EP

ESTROGEN HIGHS are from Connecticut. This is their first release of the new year, coming from the Safety Meeting Records imprint in a limited edition of just 300. But you must proceed with caution here, because just calling these guys “catchy” might be an understatement. Continue reading “Estrogen Highs – Cycles EP”

Creepoid Live in Philadelphia (03/11/11)

Who?: Creepoid
Where?: Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia, PA
When?: March 11th, 2011

As some of you should already be aware, there’s this band from Philadelphia known as CREEPOID. They took over the stage last night at Johnny Brenda’s with their heavy grunge rock, which just so happens to be their last show before they head out on their journey to SXSW in Austin at the beginning of next week. Last time we caught Creepoid was at their record release show back in January, and since then it appears they’ve been hard at work, because they shared a brand new song with us last night that I so excitedly caught on camera. Aside from that, they played a handful of songs from their latest album “Horse Heaven”, as well as a track from their debut 7″. So without further to say, how about we check those out? Continue reading “Creepoid Live in Philadelphia (03/11/11)”

Colleen Green – Green One 7″

Coming from the Hardly Art imprint is the debut 7″ from COLLEEN GREEN. She creates catchy and blissful bedroom music somewhere out of Los Angeles, California. The music is self-described as “stoner pop”, and the more you begin to follow Miss Green, the more you’ll notice her obvious love for weed. Continue reading “Colleen Green – Green One 7″”

Song of the Day #2

So in case you missed it yesterday, we’re doing this thing on the blog now called “Song of the Day”. To keep it simple, we pick a song from an album somewhere and put it here for your previewing pleasure – then it’s up to you to go and buy the album (or download, or whatever) to hear the rest on your own time. So for our second entry, we’re going to stick to the local scene and hit you up with something from CANNONS.

These Philly bros just finished recording their brand new three song demo in Brooklyn recently, and now they’re trying to share their spastic punk rock with the rest of the world. Their music refuses to follow any preformed pattern, which means there’s something unexpected around every turn in their music. Whether it’s the sharp, angular guitars or just the way these guys never seem to settle down, there’s definitely something awesome brewing here. By the time May rolls around, we should be hearing from CANNONS again in the form of a new EP, so let’s keep our fingers crossed. AND – if you’re in Philly and want something to do on Friday night, go check out CANNONS at JR’s Bar.

Wax Idols – All Too Human Cassette

WAX IDOLS is the brainchild of Hether Fedewa, and this cassette is her first official release. Coming later down the road is a 7″ from Hozac Records, and although we still have some time until that hits the shelves, this little gem here requires a head start on your attention. Song of the Day #1

For the first entry of our new “Song of the Day” feature, the song comes from a band that should be familiar if you’ve been following this blog. Coming from the Play Pinball! Records compilation “Denton Denton USA”, it’s a minute-and-a-half eyebrow burner from the adolescent boys of the FUNGI GIRLS. We’d be lying straight to your face if we said that was the only good song from the compilation, so maybe dig a little deeper and see what else you could find from it. Then do yourself a huge solid and pick up the vinyl before it’s all gone.

Cult of Youth – Cult of Youth

CULT OF YOUTH hail from Brooklyn. Their brand new LP just dropped from Sacred Bones on Feb. 22nd, jam-packed with triumphant and anthemic country neo-folk with a driving punk attitude that doesn’t really sound like anything else that’s been in our ears lately.
