Song of the Day #8

I’m sure there’s not much more I could say about KING TUFF’S “Was Dead” that hasn’t already been said, but when the new repress came through my doors yesterday there really wasn’t anything else I wanted to hear. Now I’m going to hopefully transfer that addiction over in your direction because if you haven’t heard this stuff yet, it could just be the best record from 2008 (excluding this one here).  Kyle Thomas arguably restores substance to the all-encompassing genre of rock with his 60’s and 70’s dance-influenced rock and roll, evoking an equally positive spirit paired with the notion to get up and just fuckin’ dance the night away. The last time I heard a record where all 13-fucking-tracks were just as good as the last was probably… well, never. Okay, maybe just one other time. Clearly that is an exaggerated statement.

If the thought of wanting to buy this record even crosses your mind in the least bit, DO IT NOW, or forever regret the decision. Don’t say we didn’t warn ya!

Xray Eyeballs – Crystal 7″

Here’s the last 7″ from the most recent batch of goods from the Hozac folk. It’s the XRAY EYEBALLS, whose only other recordings came from Night People and Party Store on cassette tapes. That certainly won’t be all though, because they have a full length due out soon enough via Kanine Records. Continue reading “Xray Eyeballs – Crystal 7″”

Mississippi punk duo BASS DRUM OF DEATH have their debut full length hitting the shelves April 12th from Fat Possum and Inflated Records, collectively.

These guys come from the Cats Purring Collective just like Dead Gaze, which just goes to show all the talent that’s constantly brewing down there. Together John and Colin recorded this album in a series of basements, and upon listening this immediately becomes obvious. Their buzzy sound is buried in reverb and as frantic and energetic as can be, but at the same time dynamic because each track of the album reveals something new, but it’s not like this sound is groundbreaking by any means – they’re just good at it. They take the usual destructive approach to garage-punk, singing about heathenish things like trying to score with religious girls. Awesome? Certainly. Check out the opening track “Nerve Jamming” now.

How does underground Chilean psych-rock sound to you? If you don’t have to think twice then please continue reading. We’ve definitely been seeing a bunch of this stuff lately (see Sacred Bones) and LA HELL GANG are right there in the forefront mix. They released a full length album from Blow Your Mind Records in September, and it’s overflowing with eyebrow singeing garage-psych that’s bound to leave you drooling with your jaw on the floor, probably because you’re too high to comprehend it all. Listed on their Myspace, some of their influences are certainly not a surprise in the least bit. In fact, names like J. Spaceman, “Stones” and “Jimi” should only intrigue you to listen that much more, so please do so with this cut from the album below.

Love Boat – Sliding Deck 7″

For their fifth official release, Shit Music for Shit People looked towards the caffeinated power pop of Italian garage rockers LOVE BOAT. This trio originated in Sardinia back in 2006, surrounded by countless friends and endless supplies of beer at their bathroom shows, and this is where they ended up. For all those in Austin at SXSW, this is for you. Friday marks the Hozac Records showcase at Beerland, which pretty much lasts all day long. Band after band takes the stage, drumming up their weird and mutated takes on garage, psychedelic, punk, and noise rock and then some, including Chicago’s very own HEAVY TIMES. Coming from Hozac later this year is a brand new full length from Heavy Times, and we couldn’t be more psyched.

This song below comes from one of their earlier cassette tapes from Dinosaur Club Records, which you can download with great ease by following the link below. Good luck finding this one to buy anywhere, because Dinosaur Club is non-existent at this point except for on Myspace. Get lost in the fuzzy shredded chord strum of “Night Swim”, and if you’re around town head over to Beerland right about…now! The show started at 1 and continues on till 6 before they move it all over to Cheer Up Charlies. Not sure about you, but if I were in Austin right now this is where you would find me.

The Strange Boys/ Natural Child – Scion Split 7″

Here’s one you could say came out of nowhere. I’m not even sure exactly what label released it. Was it Rough Trade or maybe even Toyota? In the long run it doesn’t really even matter, because now we get a brand new song apiece from both NATURAL CHILD and THE STRANGE BOYS.
