After their initial digital single, Chicago’s PORNO MAGS have a proper full length to share with the world. The self-titled album comes released by the band on CD format in a jewel case.
To start off on the right foot, the band debuted at #12 in the CMJ Radio Adds back in March. The album comes with 8 tracks (two of which appeared on their first digital single), clocking in at nearly 30 minutes of material. “Not Free” is the jangly introduction, driven by bright guitars and a stomping rhythm. It quickly sets the tone of the album, which bears an equal balance of progressive punk and pop. Vocals are provided by half the band, who sing along with a high-pitched squeal.
The album features a variety of influences, with songs that aim to progress their wonky sound. “Heart Attack,” “What’s Your Name” and “TV Ghost” are a few examples, evidenced by their loud-to-soft approach and gentle, post-punk inflected jam-outs. “Television Ghost” creeps with a rattling rhythm and gritty guitars, sustaining a murky sound with some troubling qualities. It proceeds to close the LP with a dark and fiery disposition, built with crushing percussion and invigorating guitar squeals. They change the vibe in album highlight “Fire Child,” which sounds bright and surfy before an explosive finale. Start by listening to the album below and see where it takes you!
