When we covered that Pains 7″ back in late December, it seemed like a pretty accurate indication that the new full length would be something of significance. Well, we all thought right.
Sure, we all thought right, but that doesn’t change the fact that I literally just missed the Pains on their stop in Philadelphia last week – fucking huge bummer if you ask me. Especially after finally giving “Belong” a couple solid listens, it just makes it that much worse. But there’s really no use regretting because they’ll be back at one point or another, right? So putting that aside, they’ve got this new album here called “Belong”, and the least you could say is that it’s a step up on the intensity scale from their debut s/t from 2009.
“Heart in Your Heartbreak” is undoubtedly deserving of being the obvious single from this album, and if it doesn’t hit a soft spot, then quite frankly we don’t know what you’re doing here. This is love at first listen, guaranteed, which was actually clear back when this 7″ came out. The colorful synth washes complement the already glamorous sound, and if this song is any indication, the Pains aren’t going anywhere for a long time. I don’t think it’s an understatement to say they’re one of the premier indie rock bands at this moment in time.
“Anne With an E” is another standout track, driven by harp-like guitar leads and straight purity. The bass hums beneath and keeps the rhythm with the jangly drumming, which in the end makes for an utterly gorgeous track. Following that, “Even in Dreams” illustrates their ever-growing sound so much more, switching up between being cautious verses and ground shaking choruses. “Girls of 1,000 Dreams” features a crashing intro and quickly becomes the heaviest and most gut-busting song on the record. The crushing bass drum and fuzzy guitar leads combine together to create a warming whirlwind of simplicity and perfection that isn’t exactly easy to ignore. Now check out these songs from the album below.
