EXEK – Ahead of Two Thoughts LP
Since 2011, Superior Viaduct in San Francisco has put together quite an eclectic roster of artists. That trend continues on their sub-label W.25TH with EXEK and their brand new brain-burner of an album, Ahead of Two Thoughts. Located in Melbourne, Australia, the 5-piece group of disgruntled post-punkers come off more as a band of doctors experimenting with a brand new (musical) life form. SHOVELS – Live in Philadelphia / Baltimore
Since May 23rd, Melbourne’s purveyors of psyched-out noise rock SHOVELS have been stateside for a tour through the US. Their trip is now nearly complete, coming to an end on June 18th in Northampton, MA. What does that mean for you? Get off your ass and go catch them before it’s too late – they’re in NYC today. We didn’t waste our chance to see the trio, as we were lucky to catch them in Philadelphia and then AGAIN in Baltimore a couple days later. At the same time, Shovels didn’t blow their chance to lay waste to an entire crowd of eager onlookers. The trio delivers their unique blend of psych and noise like a battering ram plowing through your front door, spearheaded by manic percussion while their songs progress cleanly and seamlessly right before your eyes. Their intensity is palpable and everything in the room comes to a screeching halt while these guys do what they do best.
Below you can find a slew of videos from both shows. The Philadelphia show is cut up into songs – the Baltimore show is one half-hour long video (and they play an extra track, “Arm Arm Leg”). Now please, dig in!

PREMIER: The Bats Pajamas – “Wrong House”
Fleeting Youth Records in Austin, TX is readying the debut cassette from Toronto-based witch-punk outfit THE BATS PAJAMAS. Aside from their new tape, titled No Hello, the band previously self-released their first full-length and two other EPs since July, 2010.
“Wrong House” is an impeccably scuzzy affair, built with tinny shreds of guitar and muffled vocals that change from troubled howls to blood-curdling screams in a matter of seconds. This all produces a strangely terrifying sound from the trio, who are currently gearing up for a full-fledged tour through Canada, which includes stops at NXNE and Canadian Music Week. On top of that, they’re already recording songs for another whole album.
“Wrong House” comes together with crumbling guitars and a loose rhythm, sounding as grungy, dark and disheveled as punk rock would be after it’s been lost and roaming the streets for months without a home. Guitar hooks offer sharp and spiny angles, coming off blunt and jagged as if they were ripped right out of a piece of sheet metal. Get an earful of their frightening sound right below, then sit tight as Fleeting Youth releases the cassette on May 26th – pre-order it now!
