By now I’d have to guess that most of your are familiar with DUCKTAILS. The band is fronted by Matt Mondanile, who also plays guitar in Real Estate. In case you weren’t aware, now you are. This is Mondanile’s most recent release, coming out back in September from Old English Spelling Bee.
The 7″ includes three brand new songs, one of which acts as an intro to the whole 7″. It’s simply called “Intro”, and it’s a guitar driven track that’s overflowing with positive vibes and hints to more hazy and Summery landscapes to come. “Sitting” picks up right from where the intro left off, bringing another breezy Summertime jam to the table. There’s a palpable psychedelic vibe mixed in that you can literally reach out and grasp, all while Mondanile’s shape-shifting guitar work continues to swirl and warp right above your head.
The final track, “Art Vandelay” (which is probably a reference to George from Seinfeld), has more of that woozy substance that you can hear in all of these songs, once again bringing beachy Summertime thoughts to mind. With that being said, it’s kind of hard to ignore the Summery vibes present in these songs, considering there’s something in each one. Come to think of it, most of the Ducktails songs have that similar vibe, which really means that nothing here is exactly brand new or groundbreaking, just like covering something that’s already been done. Final thoughts: This stuff doesn’t do anything but make me angry that it’s not currently Summer and 80 degress outside.
