Believe it or not, this is our first time covering BLACK LIPS around here. Not sure what took us so long, but this single includes two songs from the Black Lips very first recording sessions in 2000 at Die Slaughterhaus.
This single features Black Lips just as they are today, minus guitarist Ben Eberbaugh who passed a few years back in 2002. Without Slovenly Recordings, we wouldn’t have this repress sitting here, but thankfully that is not the case. These two songs come from a time when the Black Lips were still hungry for exposure and that is quite obvious. Everything sounds raw and unpolished as they plow through both tracks without the slightest remorse, showing plenty of confidence and determination even at such an early stage in their band’s existence.
“Does She Want” is a bluesy garage rocker of sorts, showing off crunchy and caffeinated guitar hooks that continuously spin round-and-round in a dizzying fashion. Jangly percussion and a wailing harmonica help supply an even more authentic blues vibe as they slow everything down with a dirge-like feel right in the middle. Once they roll back to their original pace, it’s a done deal. This catchy and undoubtedly scratchy blues rocker makes you wish Black Lips were brand new again.
Flipping the 7″ reveals another burner titled “Stoned”, which somehow turns out to be even more relentless than the first. About halfway through the boys tear shit up with mutilated guitar screeching that will leave you cringing in mercy while the rest of the band pummels everything in sight with their stomping rhythm. As if we had to tell you, listen to this stuff with the volume cranked way up, but going to high might result in some busted speakers!
