Sport of Kings – Free Jazz 7″

Hailing from Brooklyn comes SPORT OF KINGS. They’re releasing their debut 7″ to the world this February, which includes two new tracks of their unique and brassy blend of classy self-described “indie yacht-rock”.

Taking the stage with seven different members, Sport of Kings are definitely doing something slightly different than a lot of the bands from Brooklyn these days. Three of their seven members hold down some type of brass instrument, whether it’s the trombone, tenor sax, or the trumpet, and this line-up definitely helps give the band some nods to “big band” qualities. They take on a lofty but classy jazz influenced sound with delicate vocals, jaunty whistling, and a highly laid-back energy, like there’s not a single worry in the world besides lounging out in the cool clear water – which sounds highly refreshing. A-side “Free Jazz” sticks to that formula until the final minute or so, before the song receives a sudden jolt of energy which changes things up a bit – afterward it transforms into more of a jazzy, indie-pop anthem with snappy drumming and lots of clapping.

Like I said, these guys are definitely working on something a bit different than most bands out there right now. If the 7″ turns out to not be enough for you, maybe you should check out their EP as well, and don’t forget about the B-side song “1964” – it’s a much different track than the A-side with a progressively growing climax, and it never seems to stick to one solid pattern. You can listen to that B-side right here on their Bandcamp, and then maybe snatch up their 7″ while yr there. See ya tomorrow.
