The Jameses – Caribou 7″

The Jameses hail from Lake Worth, Florida, and this single here is their second 7″ from 2010. As the story goes, this will be their last single before their full length is released sometime this year, so these songs should give us the best taste of what’s to come.

Starting out on the A-side is the track “Caribou”, and you’ll notice almost immediately that it has an eerie quality. There’s a constantly repeating guitar chord that comes through the speakers like tiny daggers hitting you over and over, working their way through the mysterious sweeping synths and woozy atmosphere. Flip that 7″ over for the B-side “Fifth Dimension”, and you’re suddenly face to face with unrelenting sounds that don’t let up for the duration of the entire song. They’re so relentless to the point where the song might become a bit stale and overbearing at some point, but that’s really for you to decide. It’s also pretty difficult to put a finger on exactly what those sounds are, but you will most likely only care to figure it out if you’re not turned off by the undying relentlessness.

In the end both of these electronically-instrumental hybrid tracks have relentless qualities, each in their own way, whether it’s from the colorful synth washes or sharp guitar chords. You can hear the A-side of the 7″ right below, and then head on over to their Myspace where you can check out the B-side “Fifth Dimension”. Keep an eye out for their full length to come later this year as well.
