DIGITAL LEATHER and THE HUSSY come from fairly different worlds musically, but their new split 12-inch, out now on Southpaw Records, is a solid pairing. Taken as a whole, the blend of electronic minimalism and garage clamor feels more like a collaborative effort than two distinct sides, making for a gratifying listen. New York isn’t what it once was. Aging punks may vomit war stories of the squalid existences they suffered through in the pre-Giuliani years but they typically do so a part of haute couture fashion shows or in other more self aware but equally brain dead displays of nostalgic masturbation. Continue reading “Believer/Law – Matters of Life and Death EP”
Slug Guts weren’t so much a band as they were a primal force of nature conjured up from the darkest recesses of a chasm in the Earth – guitars whipped and struck with the frightening intensity of sandstorms bearing down on you as drums rolled in from a distance like thunder warning you to run, and those vocals… it was like being torn apart by a cackling pack of starved hyenas. WHITE HEX, then, seems to be a measured response.

Hailing from Philadelphia, CHEERLEADER is a new local band who self-describe their sound as “hazy electro-pop.” The quintet recently began releasing new tracks on their Soundcloud, along with a video for their lead single “New Daze.” The video caught the eyes of folks at NME and MTV, both of which deemed Cheerleader as a sort of “best new buzz band.”
“New Daze” is their most memorable single yet, led by fuzzy electronics and an icy atmosphere that keeps things cool. Bass lines sound fat and muddy, complemented by colorful swells of warbled guitars and electronics. The song becomes increasingly detailed as it plays out, wrapping us in a wave of speckled electronics that are clean and crystal-clear. Pretty vocal hooks come drenched in a palpable layer of haze, leading us on a particularly heavenly ride as we scrape our foreheads on the clouds. Listen to “New Daze” right below, then check out Cheerleader on Soundcloud for a few more tracks from their set of demos. If you’ve previously dug anything from their Philly neighbors in Cough Cool, or maybe even Painted Palms, then this stuff is for you! If you’re in Philadelphia, catch them on March 3rd at Kung Fu Necktie!
