Istanbul Is Sleepy dropped at the tail end of 2017 featuring a few songs that would later end up on Shadow People, THE LIMIÑANAS fifth studio album. Both released by Because Music in France, the two albums are a fun and uplifting batch of ye-ye psych-pop nuggets that only The Limiñanas could pull off.
It might sound like rugged jangle rock to some, maybe dazed and slow-dragging desert crawls to others. But the Limiñanas have been churning out these tambourine-heavy tunes since as early as 2010 and their sound is unmistakable. They deliver four of these dirty and rusty psych numbers on Istanbul Is Sleepy, somehow enveloping them with the most enchanting fuzz. Two of the songs are also included on the full length LP, meaning this 12″ includes two exclusive tracks won’t find anywhere else.
Nasally bass guitar opens “Nuit Fantôme,” revealing Lionel Limiñana’s smoky, spoken-word French vocals. He also tosses in the glinting guitar squeals you hear hidden underneath the dense and buzzy drone, which you will find woven effortlessly through a few of these tracks. The La-La chorus turns into some big and chant worthy sing-along, scattered with bouts of wiry guitar fury underneath the sweeping arrangement. “Shadow People” includes a set of glimmering bell tones, adding great melodic depth to the infectious chorus backed by The Pink Tiles, Emmanuelle Seigner and Renaud Picard. EP closer “Angels and Devils” is a cover of Echo & the Bunnymen from their 1984 album Ocean Rain, coming in the form of a raunchy stomper with a bumping, tom-tom heavy rhythm. Hear for yourself with these few tracks below.
