I am not sure what’s going on in France at this point, but Croque Macadam Records in Montrouge has been churning out some great stuff. Their latest is this two-track 7″ from Rennes-based band BASTON.
Baston hits us with a single slab of wax with two smash hits – “Alamo” on the A side b/w “Falkland.” Baston’s sound is full of reverb, catchy hooks and clean distortion that is held together by melodic, echo-y singing, and rolling, surf-inspired drumming. These songs are classic garage rock, so definitive that it’s difficult to make any comparison to one band or era of the genre. Having said that, Baston is not derivative to the point of sounding re-cycled – they manage to put a fresh twist on the format with inspired lyrics to keep you listening.
They sound very comfortable as a group – they sing along and clap their hands in a surfy, beach-band kind of way. They jam out for a little at the end of “Falkland” to add dramatics to the mix. Overall this is a cool little piece of wax and we’re already waiting to see what comes next. Listen below now, and in the mean time go snag yourself a copy before they’re all gone.
