Thee Open Sex – s/t LP

THEE OPEN SEX is a 5-piece band from Bloomington, IN who just released their debut s/t LP on Magnetic South Recordings. They share members with Apache Dropout (their “sister band”) and their LP was recorded entirely in analogue by John Dawson and Haley Fohr (aka Circuit des Yeux).

For their first LP Thee Open Sex come bearing an impressive debut that artfully falls somewhere between psychedelic and punk rock for an exceptionally ecstatic and atmospheric release. Each of the 7 songs comes with a mind of its own, totaling just over a half-hour worth of material that boasts sonically electrified textures, high-voltage guitars, Miss Mess’s bold, fearless howl and an overarching level of progression that pushes songs to exciting and unexpected new heights. While they’re clearly capable of taking things above and beyond, they’re still not afraid to deliver the straight-up, rollicking intensity of tracks like “Peanut Butter” or “Gimme Away”, both of which suggest nothing but an absolutely crushing live performance.

Aside from these jammers, other tracks like “Light of Love” or “Live Dead” come in to mix things up, supplying the progressive elements to an album that only grows bigger and bolder with each passing minute. “Light of Love” is a track of its own, which starts on a calmer note but deliberately picks up momentum as it all unfolds. Before you know it you’re floating amongst shimmering waves of guitar electricity, radiating positivity for miles in all directions as we’re continually swept into a black hole of exuberance. “Live Dead” sounds exactly like what the title would suggest, offering up a perpetual, 7-minute swirl that’s as dizzying as it is destructive. Miss Mess guides us through the sweeping fury with her lively chanting, sealing up yet another track that is one of a kind on this raging LP.
