BARBARIAN of San Diego, CA dropped their debut 7″ Daze of Youth on the Loose Recordings imprint, a subsidiary label of Manimal Vinyl. It leads to their new 6-song EP which will be out later this year.
Barbarian come bearing a sound which they’ve called “coldwave,” melding a few different influences together – namely garage rock and post-punk – into the same murky mix for a dark and troubling strand of what sounds like ethereal space pop. It’s really hard to nail it though, because both tracks on this 7″ almost sound like two different bands if you didn’t know any better. Together they last over 10 minutes, showcasing a cosmic sound that’s fuzzy sometimes, sharp other times, always hazy and completely lysergic. B-side “Medium Spirits” is like a whole new world compared to the A-side, with glinting guitars waves and woozy synth textures that wash over the mix with a breath of color. Flip it back to the A-side and you’re in the midst of ripping guitar shreds that are responsible for any comparisons to garage rock, breaking everything down heavily in the final two minutes. Andrew Mills’ shadowy, possessed vocals gravitate away as the track fades out, wrapping up a debut 7″ that sets us up for their upcoming EP.
