Ancient Sky – Castle 7″

ancient sky castle 7 wharf cat records 2012

Wharf Cat Records just released a new 7″ from ANCIENT SKY along with the new year. These Brooklynites dropped one of the most underrated records of 2012 and this new Castle 7″ follows the same path.

To put things into perspective, “Castle” just may be our favorite Ancient Sky track to date. We haven’t heard much since their T.R.I.P.S. LP from last year, but with a track like this it’s a sure bet these guys have been busy. They take their folk-leaning psychedelic rock to new heights with a monumental track like “Castle,” easily leaving positive vibes for any future Ancient Sky material that could follow. The song unfolds slowly with a glimmering lead guitar which suddenly becomes the overarching hook for a majority of the track. Fuzzy textures and crashing drums combine into a whirlwind of sweeping psychedelic fury, including fiery guitar flares that causes everything to swell in a fit of rage. The good news is there’s still a B-side you’ve yet to encounter and it follows the same haunting and grandiose formula. Soaring vocals and searing guitar shrills help characterize the foreboding “Allegory”, revealing primal, tom-heavy beats and glowing guitars to create a smokey soundscape to wrap up the 7″.

There’s no answer out there right now, but with a 7″ like this we’ve got to think these guys have more up their sleeves for 2013. We’ll see what happens, but in the meantime don’t miss these tracks below.
