Hailing from down-under in Geelong, Australia comes the HIEROPHANTS. This is their debut 7″ on Anti Fade/Birds Love Fighting Records, showcasing their breezy sound with equal parts garage and psych.
Much like their split cassette we covered in October, they continue by delivering their crunchy strand of garage rock at just the right speed – it’s somewhere right in between, never too fast or too slow. Each track features a sensible balance of just the right amount of gritty, metallic guitar twang that helps reinforce the groovy, psychedelic vibes that radiate from these tracks. A familiar song like “Wray Gunn” will confirm this almost immediately, but a track like “Beat Your Chest for the Hierophants” will have you second-guessing with haunting and monotonous tribal chants. Creaky guitar solos help stress the creepy vibes within, making for an unexpectedly primitive track. But don’t be fooled because everything we’ve heard from the Hierophants til now has been particularly consistent. Let’s hope there’s more for us somewhere in 2013.
