Since their initial Beach Coma 7″, San Diego’s own PLATEAUS have come a long way. Open Skies is now their third 7″ single and their second on the Art Fag Recordings imprint to date.
By now you sort of get the feeling these guys might have a full length coming up around the corner. On top of that, you’re probably already thinking they sound ready for one after the way this new 7″ plays out. Once again these guys serve up their fun-loving brand of hazy beach-punk that made their other singles memorable, but they seem to flesh out the sound more by supplying some extra detail and maybe by even losing some of the previous lo-fi scuzz that was crowding the grooves. One other thing to consider here is their knack for guitar work – they know when it’s most useful and certainly use it to their advantage.
For example, “Open Skies” features some glinting guitar leads that scatter out across the duration of the song. The rest of the track sounds nice and warmly layered, which only helps intensify the positive, sun-shining vibes that come across in the music. “Jump Now” features some more shredded sounding guitars and a pulsing bass hook, combining for a memorable bridge that includes some skillful guitar work as the snare drum hits suddenly become broadened by hand claps. Check these songs below and then sit tight for whatever comes next!
