The Cinnamon Band – Black Love 7″

The Funny/ Not Funny label in Virginia has been churning out the goods these days. They continue with the debut 7″ from the twangy guitar duo of THE CINNAMON BAND who also hail from Virginia.

For those who may be unfamiliar, the Cinnamon Band is indeed a duo consisting of John Harouff and Neil Campbell. As said best in the biography on their website, the Cinnamon Band play “ambitious heartbreaking pop music with every inch of fat cut off.” This is a truly accurate description of their sound because their music features eloquent lyrics about love (“Black Love, “Tough Love”), but their musical formula is surprisingly minimalistic. Considering the fact that they operate as a duo, this minimalist aspect seems right on the money. Their songs feature hook heavy guitars that are clean and polished, backed by soft and swift drum beats that are far from overwhelming. In fact, the percussion leaves plenty of room for the guitars and vocals to take the spotlight, which they seem to do without much effort anyway.

Both of these songs come off as immediately catchy and heartfelt, but they do it all up with their own calm and striped down nature that helps makes them unique. Pulsing guitars lead the way with a country-esque twang, pushing songs along at a walking pace that is just too good to be true – but it is. Listen to both sides of the single below and then go buy one from Funny/ Not Funny – there’s only 300 to go around! Also, if you preorder, you’re entered for a chance to win a test pressing of the 7″! Can’t argue with that!
