DIY is the key for the latest release from MONSTER RALLY. Coming from the Gold Robot label in Oakland, this is his first release since the “Coral” LP that came out at the beginning of the year.
In terms of DIY releases, it doesn’t get much more legitimate than this. Monster Rally went through the motions, from creating the music to screen-printing and hand-numbering the record jackets himself, to everything else in between (gluing, the artwork, etc.). The end result was like the breakdown of the entire season of summer into eleven minutes of abstract and sun-drenched tropical-pop which we are thrilled to be sharing with you today.
Starting with “Siberian Girls”, this puts you right in the middle of a woozy and upbeat beach jam with plenty of clanking percussion and floating hazes, with an assertive yet groovy bass line to push on underneath. This leads into “The New Optimism” where it’s hard not to picture yourself in a slightly overcrowded coastal celebration, with ample barbeques and undying enthusiasm that stems from the triumphant brass. Needless to say, this track couldn’t have a more perfect title. The sample at the end has a different vibe but eventually leads into the next track, “Chaska Beach”, with stunning coalescence.
It’s hard to pick just one individual song from this single as the highlight, but “Chaska Beach” might take the cake with all of it’s delightful sun-squinting wonderment. These collage-like and sample based tracks will quickly turn your head in approval as they are absolutely perfect for the coming summer months, as one track morphs into the next without the slightest difficulty. This gives you no other choice but to go with the flow and see where you end up. “Surf Erie” is your final destination which has a new underlying mysterious tone paired with that breezy surf rhythm, which slowly fades into one final sample of utter Hawaiian paradise.
