What we have today is quite an eccentric release from the Sibling Sex label. Lasting past the eleven minute mark are multiple tracks apiece from the likes of artists who prefer to work alone – Alex Zhang Hungtai of DIRTY BEACHES and Megan Remy of U.S. GIRLS.
In terms of pairing artists together for split releases, this one should make plenty of sense. One of the most obvious reasons already being stated right above. Other reasons should become clear as you listen to this antagonizing yet captivating single. The first three U.S. Girls tracks come off as if they’re possessed by an evil spirit, at the same time producing these intoxicating repetitious rhythms that constantly swirl around your head until you can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality. All sorts of harsh and sonar-like sounds pour out from your speakers as “Mah Marie” unravels, ultimately forcing you into an intensified black and white tribal world where hypnotism is just an understatement.
On the flip side is Dirty Beaches territory, holding down the remaining six minutes of this vast single with two more songs. “Drunk Driving” is yet another entrancing tune, creeping along with a distant pulsating echo that resonates from the inside of a desolate warehouse infested by the distracted undead. They can’t seem to shake the infectious underlying bass that’s hidden in the depths of this song and after a few minutes you’ll have the same problem. These recordings are so meager and spacious but at the same time they manage to absorb you and make you feel engrossed in the obscurity whether you choose to or not. Check out these deep cuts from the single below, and be sure to snag this one before it’s gone because there’s only 200 to go around.
