Released in the later half of 2010 was the third full length from BLACK MOUNTAIN. This 7″ we have today (which was released on Record Store Day) features the third single from the album “Wilderness Heart.”
I’m not as well versed in the Black Mountain discography as I would like to be, but after coming across this single, that doesn’t look to stay that way for much longer. A-side “Rollercoaster” is a dynamic jam with heavy metal-esque psych guitars and then suddenly changing things up with a dreamy approach, made up by splashing cymbals and blinking synths. Huge and staggering guitar licks go a long way to prove this music has a metal edge to it, sounding heated and urgent with plenty of fury, equally bringing to mind terms like stoner rock if you will. The shared male-female vocals stand out more than any other element in their music, perhaps with their best use in “In the Drones” as Amber Webber howls away with authority in her voice. While “Rollercoaster” was a more straightforward jam, “In the Drones” keeps you guessing a bit more with a creepy pace and mysteriously glowing guitar work to fill the open spaces. Now check’em both out right below.
