The Shrapnelles – Asscalibur 7″

You ever listen to something once, not think much of it, then give it another go and it’s a whole different story? Can anybody explain why that happens? Maybe it did with this new SHRAPNELLES 7″, but then it’s like “Of course Hozac wouldn’t let me down.”

This female dominated band hails from Calgary in Canada, and this single here is indeed their debut release. As the internet claims, these girls combine raucous energy and manage to look attractive doing it the entire time. However, with a track name like “My Mom is Hot,” you might think twice before coming to any conclusions – but then will quickly dismiss that statement after this six minute single flys by and dazzles. They’re essentially sticking to the garage rock formula with plenty of noisy and lo-fi tenancies, while simultaneously demanding authority and this is obvious. Clearly they are hungry and this rackety debut 7″ proves that like no other. Their hooky guitars will rope you in and refuse to let go, eventually forcing rabid soloing (like in “Desert Furs”) straight down your throat to make for a hell of a smoking finish to the entire 7″, which at first listen will catch any listener off-guard.

Their totally abrasive approach and quick song lengths will only leave you begging for more, perhaps maybe even like you need to cleanse your body after listening to such heavenly voices. There doesn’t appear to be too much else out there from these girls right now, but there is one other song on their Myspace you could check out. Just give it some time and there’s bound to be more from these sloppy shredders, it’s just a matter of when that will be.
