The Dodos took a year off in-between their last two albums and made a few changes in the meantime. The vibraphonist is no longer part of the mix, although he still lends his talents to the album, but the Dodos went back to their original spastic formula this time around. Love Boat – Sliding Deck 7″
For their fifth official release, Shit Music for Shit People looked towards the caffeinated power pop of Italian garage rockers LOVE BOAT. This trio originated in Sardinia back in 2006, surrounded by countless friends and endless supplies of beer at their bathroom shows, and this is where they ended up. Continue reading “Love Boat – Sliding Deck 7″”
Mi Ami – Dolphins
By now you may have heard MI AMI figuratively traded in their past ways for a whole new lifestyle – the approach from “Steal Your Face” and everything prior is now a thing of the past. Their new sound was first illustrated on the “Ital’s Theme” 12″ we covered, only things seem a bit more experimental this time around. Continue reading “Mi Ami – Dolphins”
The Limiñanas – AF3458 7″
I’m totally ashamed of myself for taking this long to discover the charming sound that is THE LIMIÑANAS, but sometimes these things just slip through the cracks. This new 7″ is their first release of the new year, and hopefully not the last. Continue reading “The Limiñanas – AF3458 7″”
Song of the Day #5
For all those in Austin at SXSW, this is for you. Friday marks the Hozac Records showcase at Beerland, which pretty much lasts all day long. Band after band takes the stage, drumming up their weird and mutated takes on garage, psychedelic, punk, and noise rock and then some, including Chicago’s very own HEAVY TIMES. Coming from Hozac later this year is a brand new full length from Heavy Times, and we couldn’t be more psyched.
This song below comes from one of their earlier cassette tapes from Dinosaur Club Records, which you can download with great ease by following the link below. Good luck finding this one to buy anywhere, because Dinosaur Club is non-existent at this point except for on Myspace. Get lost in the fuzzy shredded chord strum of “Night Swim”, and if you’re around town head over to Beerland right about…now! The show started at 1 and continues on till 6 before they move it all over to Cheer Up Charlies. Not sure about you, but if I were in Austin right now this is where you would find me.

The Beets – Time Brought Age 7″
By now I feel like most of you are familiar with The Beets. They just released their sophomore album “Stay Home”, and now they’re back again with a 7″ featuring two new and original songs, courtesy of Captured Tracks. Continue reading “The Beets – Time Brought Age 7″”
The Strange Boys/ Natural Child – Scion Split 7″
Here’s one you could say came out of nowhere. I’m not even sure exactly what label released it. Was it Rough Trade or maybe even Toyota? In the long run it doesn’t really even matter, because now we get a brand new song apiece from both NATURAL CHILD and THE STRANGE BOYS. Continue reading “The Strange Boys/ Natural Child – Scion Split 7″”
Song of the Day #4
Evil Weevil Records is a label from Philadelphia that (sadly) more or less just showed up on my radar. Only after picking up their Big Eyes 7″ in a nearby record store (coming soon) and learning through Noah of DOOMSTAR! that this project even existed, you can now say that I am aware.
One of the first things that caught my eye was that strangely colorful cover art of the new COUSIN BRIAN 7″ (which just goes to show that a cover art is crucial). Their new 7″ is four tracks long of dangerously energetic and twisted garage punk, as there’s definitely a noticeable element of weirdness in their sound. But just because they’re a bit eccentric doesn’t mean they don’t know what they’re doing, because clearly that’s not the case. Between the infectious sing-along melodies of “It’s On Me” or the blazing guitar riffage of “Do Stay Over”, Cousin Brian easily fit in here, no questions asked. I think you’ll agree. Follow the link below for a free download of the full 7″, but just make sure to say thanks. I’ve been told these guys were quite the entertaining bunch when it comes to a live show, so don’t miss out if you get the chance.

The Mantles – Raspberry Thighs 7″
This 7″ here is THE MANTLES debut European release, coming from SDZ Records in France. It features two brand new tracks, which are both overflowing with enough positive vibes to keep you smiling for days. Continue reading “The Mantles – Raspberry Thighs 7″”
Women in Prison – Strange Waves 7″
Add another band to the list that’s awesome and comes from Texas (which is where we should all be at some point this week). WOMEN IN PRISON just released their debut 7″ from Hozac Records, and it’s a face-beating kick in the ass of raging punk that will throw you down and continue to kick you while you’re helplessly on the ground.
