The Young – Sweet 7″

This little gem right here saw the light of day just before the new year, just in time for THE YOUNG to take it on their east coast tour. Hailing from Austin, TX, these guys continue on from their debut “Voyagers of Legend” from earlier in 2010.

Coming from the Mexican Summer label, this new 7″ is bound to please if you enjoyed “Voyagers of Legend”. Two new tracks fill out both sides, starting with the sultry “Sweet” and then flipping over to the lazy “Swollen”. The A-side “Sweet” picks up with razor sharp guitars, and before the first minute your face to face with otherworldly sound effects that sound as if they’re being transmitted directly from outer-space. The whispered and delicate vocals help complement the eerie effects, but I’m still trying to figure out what the hell is making those sounds. Either way, the scratchy sandpaper guitars help create a tense and thick environment, which will eventually make way for “Swollen”.

The B-side “Swollen” takes a slightly different approach, coming off lazy with a tempo that just keeps creeping along with obscurity. The raspy vocals are a bit chilling again this time around, but they enhance the moody and dripping attitude of this track. The drums just keep pushing on, as they help hold this broken-down dirge-jam stick together better than any other element in the song. It has a subtly psyched-out ending, which is kind of eye-widening because it happens out of nowhere. Do yourself a favor and check out both of these jams below, and snag that 7″ from Insound because it’s only $5.
