Coming out this February is the brand new, second full length album from CHAIN AND THE GANG. This 7″ sort of acts as a teaser for the album, because none of the songs come from the new tracklist. Instead, this is almost like an attempt to get you pumped up for the new record.
If you want to get closer to hearing the new album, there is one thing you can do. If you take a second to closely read over the new tracklist on Insound, you will discover that at least two of the songs from this 7″ are included. While it’s not exactly clear what will come next, we’re pretty sure these will hold you over for now. The new full length is entitled “Music’s Not for Everyone”, and it will be available from K Records come February 22nd.
Said best by the dudes at K Records, this single is “a logical link from ‘Down With Liberty…Up With Chains!’ to the forthcoming Chain and the Gang long-player ‘Music’s Not for Everyone.'” If you’ve already heard the first full length, then you’ll have no problem agreeing with that statement. Both cuts from this 7″ follow a nearly identical rhythm from the first track of the first album called “Chain Gang Theme (I See Progress)”. Although similar, the rest of the songs are drastically different – filling out with heavy piano solos, a murmuring but hilarious Ian Svenonius, and bluesy, twangin’ guitar licks that sound strangely familiar.
The B-side features Calvin Johnson (aka Selector Dub Narcotic), who lends his voice to the song along with Svenonius. Johnson can be heard from beginning to end, and his vocal efforts are certainly worth laughing about. His crooning lyrics about playing Twister (“Left foot to blue; right hand on green”) will definitely catch you off guard, and we suggest you pay attention to his lyrical nonsense. These guys are an awesome pair, and they make for and interesting AND hilarious listen, which is definitely not an everyday pairing when it comes to music.
It’s hard to say whether this was done with serious intentions or if they were simply messing around for fun, but either way the end result is pretty rad, and it definitely does it’s job of making you curious for the new full length – to which we say “BRING IT ON!!!”
PS – For comparison purposes, the first track “Chain Gang Theme (I See Progress)” from “Up With Liberty…Down With Chains!” can also be heard below!
Memorable quotes from the B-side:
“There’s a chain and the gang breakin’ rocks in the rain.”
“If there’s a weak link…someone’s gonna hang.”
“There’s a chain and the gang and somebody’s lame.”
“Left foot to blue; right hand on green.”
Something about backstroke…
“There’s a ‘uh-uh-uh’ feeling in my gut.”
“There’s a fly in the ointment, and a gang on the street.”
“Let’s keep your appointment…keep it clean.”
“I would never…”
